WACS-TV Tower Destroyed

This will probably be of interest to some of you. GPB's 1100 ft. WACS-TV tower near Dawson was destroyed by the storms last night. And it fell onto the transmitter building. Not sure if anything else was on the tower, but GPB regards WACS-TV as a "fill-in" station for the area between Columbus and Albany (i.e., Plains), so I don't know if this will be a priority.

It's been a bad year for TV towers in the Albany area. Does anyone know the status of the WALB and WFXL towers that fell earlier? Also, wasn't WACS already scheduled to be moved south as part of the GPB DTV conversion?

No, you're thinking of WABW Pelham, which is scheduled to move to WCTV's tower at the Florida line. WABW will also probably take over WCTV's channel 6. That will improve Tallahassee and Valdosta coverage at the expense of Albany -- which would probably make WACS the preferred Albany station. WACS is licensed for both Albany and Columbus coverage at present but is neither city's primary GPB station.

I know WABW-DT won't start utill late 2007-08 I live in Crawfordville Florida will I get WABW-DT when they goes on full power??

You should be able to; Crawfordville is well within their channel 5 CP. But you will need a large VHF antenna to get it.

I do have a large VHF outside antenna and I have it pointed between north to northeast of Tallahassee to get all of the tallahassee's digtal channels. WTXL-DT just went up to high power but they having prombs with there digtal tower.

If you can get WCTV's analog signal reliably, then WABW should be fine when they come on. Initially that will be on channel 5 with a sharp null to the SE to protect WUFT Gainesville. When analog ceases, they will be on channel 6 with an omnidirectional antenna.

The real question is what GPB is going to do about WACS. I know that their Savannah station has been running on reduced power for several years, and they are planning to wait it out until digital. I wonder if they will just decide to skip the analog and just build a new digital facility for WACS. They also will need to consider whether the current transmitter site makes sense, or if it would be wiser to build it closer to Albany, given that the Pelham station will be moving south.

GPB is still working to get state funding for the digital transition. The move to get so many VHF allocations for their full power and translator stations is probably to reduce equipment costs, since VHF needs less power.

I've heard funding is not an issue anymore; the contract was awarded a while ago. But the contractor has a long time to get everything done... and they are doing all the stations at once, instead of one at a time.

A location to the south would make more sense especially given that WACS-DT is going to be on channel 8, and WTVM is and will be on 9. With the current proposed facilities, WTVM reduces power in that direction and still has negotiated interference between it and WACS.
