Waddever happened to: WWUN jocks from the 70's.....

If you are ever in the Memphis/Tupelo area, I will spring for Beverages and Catfish with all the trimmings...Glad you are doing well....Did you Know Jimmy McCollough and do you, or others know whaddever happened to him...Cheers...The Chief.

Was Reid Reker "John David Spangler" when he was there?

I worked with Spangler here in Fort Wayne at least twice. Went to college with Reid. Both talented folks....
Hey Blair!

I remember driving through Jackson back in the early 70's to hear Blair on WWUN and Steve Star on WRBC. As I switched back and forth between the stations they were always playing the exact same song. I stopped by WWUN to see my old friend Blair and he said Steve was moving over to WWUN the next week and they were doing it as a joke. Oh the good old days....David do you remember riding around Natchez in your Fiat when you came for a visit. If memory serves me right, you were working at KVIL in Whitecastle, LA.

Yo! Skinny! Dang... you remember when I came up to see Eric E. ("The Wagon Wheel")? You realize that was over 36 years ago? YIKES! You're my oldest radio friend. That has to depress you! :D

That was my sister's Fiat, though. I still don't think she knows I drove it there. ;D And White Castle was KEVL. Or KLSU. Put off the air by the FCC. Gotta love it...

Blair...Tell us about White Castle...I am sure there are interesting stories there....

White Castle? My first 1590. 1kw daytimer. Owned by a judge from Bunkie, La. He sold it and the new people sold it to people who sold it and the FCC finally discovered no one was sure who owned it and it didn't matter because no one who was part of the ownership held the license. All that is left now is the cement base to the tower.

Speaking of WWUN, anyone remember the battle going on between WWUN and WRBC in 1968, I think, involving Gary Pucket? It was the WRBC shower of stars with Jay and the Techiques, Sam the Sham, The Happenings, Napolian (who did his one song), Strawberry Alarm Clock and headliner Gary Pucket and the Union Gap. I remember WWUN running promos about a party they were throwing with Gary Pucket and listeners could win tickets. WRBC was running promos saying "Hi, I'm the REAL Gary Pucket and I don't know anything about a party". I called WWUN and talked to Jesse James Jr. and said Gary Pucket said he wasn't coming to the party. He got very upset and said that was his problem if he didn't want to come. It was my first concert, I'll never forget it!

KEVL? Yeah... 15 years old and clueless. :D

Johny... are you SURE you want to admit your first concert was Gary Puckett? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Speaking of clueless. I had an aircheck from 1969 where I did a PSA over the intro of the song and the vocal hit after the first three numbers of the phone number. So I decided I better give the rest of the number out. At the end of the song I came on and said "3527". You know how people pay attention to phone numbers on the radio. No the Gary Puckett show isn't so embarrising in comparision! ;D

With a razorblade splice, you could cut that song out for a nifty aircheck, ya know. Sounds more like a Jack Talley move, though.

Whatever happened to Jack the Whack, anyway.? He came thru Jackson about a decade or so ago and stopped at Beasley Road to visit. Seems he was in Houston, at the time.

Notice how we speak in decades now instead of years? Or some of us in eras, like, "back when I had SOME hair"? I have mine,by the way.

The last I heard Reid Reeker was market manager for cluster in San Antoinio. Craid Dale is part owner of a cluster in Hot Springs, AR.

First let me say I never come to this board but tonight I was wondering about my past? A number of stations popped into my head – WJLF, W1 and others. Much to my surprise I found this thread.

I still have a half dozen reel to reel tapes of W1, especially the Rock159 era, including those Dr Brock IDs. Douglas B. could I tell a few tails about you young man! I also think I recognize I couple of other names here. J. Boyd. Remember Rick Martin? And Tim LaBlac? Even though its been 30+ years I still remember my first night on the air when a party started next to the station in that grave yard.

I think I still have that wonderful 62JDX station bio with tanner and the crew. Man-o-man Jackson was one hell of a market back then.

Regards from Texas!
SZ

Ps J. Boyd I really didn’t mean to blow up the transmitter!
::)
