I heard an ad over the weekend saying the station was going to be a thing of the past. Anyone else hear it? I was told from good sources that their old GM Jeff Frank was seen back in town. New management? format change?
 
See my post below about CC possibly selling two out of four Valley stations.

Does Jeff Frank represent another radio company that could be looking at buying WAEB-AM?

Also, what did you mean by "WAEB going away"?
 
Last I heard, Jeff Frank was in Kingston, New York as a regional GM. Not sure which company. May have been CC.
 
"A thing of the past'? Oldies to replace wkap "crappy kappy"? It would be neat to hear the heritage Top 40 station retrace it's pop roots. I remember listening to Gene K and Doug Weldon (who also worked at WRAW) on the old "7-9-0".
 
I heard the "thing of the past" promo today, too. Could just mean oldies on the weekends. I mean, would they really get rid of Bobby Gunther Walsh, !GASP?!
 
They're running several commercials, saying things like "Barbara Streisand fans will be pleased", "WAEB will be a thing of the past real soon", "Liberals will rejoice", etc.. I have no idea what it means, or how soon "real soon" is. Sure would be a shocker, though, to see it go!
 
When you put Marxist Babs Streisand and pleased liberals together in a sentence, it conjures up only one nauseating idea - Air America.

What about Standards? They're from the past, and Streisand is considered a standards artist.
 
The real question is why would CC flush the talk format away? It does well in the market. Plus we have always been told that Oldies or Standards are dead or dieing formats. I don't know this to be 100% true but we are fed the line that those formats don't pull in the numbers and, more importantly, don't bring in the dollars. If the station is being sold, I could see a format flip. But if CC is keeping it, I would will be shocked if it flips. I guess we will all find out soon enough, though.
 
So let me get this straight..you trade in Beck, Rush, Hannity, and Savage for the loser lineup Air America has to offer? Give me a break. Air America isn't working anywhere, why would you bring it to the Lehigh Valley? If CC does sell AEB AM, I would thing a Hispanic station witha good signal would make the most sense.
 
I don't want this to be misconstrued, but is it disconcerting when it is believed that the best thing that can be done with a radio signal licensed in America, which does not carry outside of America, is to flip it to a third world language? There's a perceived long term future for third world language broadcasting within a first world country? Would that be a good and desirable thing?
 
As the hispanic population continues to grow in the Lehigh Valley, one would think an upgrade would be in order. The current owners of1600 should try to buy AEB AM and move their hispanic format there. Standards are available on the market on WEST. But, a second standards station serving the western side of the valley might make sense..you turn 1600 into a standards station. Jolly Joe should also drop the hodge podge and go straight ahead oldies on WGPA.

In the Valley, Hispanic is more of a growth format than either oldies or standards.
 
Well, it seems WAEB is going oldies. Today, I heard a spot, featuring Mike Mitman, saying "the oldies are coming to WAEB. Hits from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Keep listening for details". I heard it several times. Plus, Bobbie Gunther Walsh, the morning guy (for the past 20 or so years) has been out for the past week and a half, so my guess is he's looking for another gig. He's back tomorrow, though. Sure will be a sad day for me, especially since the next closest talk station is in Philly. :(
 
Since WAEB returns to music, who picks up the talk void now in the LV? I believe Nassau should take sports off of 1320 and put Beck, Rush, and Hannity there. These shows do need to be cleared in the valley.

That's what they have told us - in the past. I believe what they were really saying is the formats didn't give them the license to steal like CHR or Top 40. Now that the economy has begun to drop like a stone the only people who may still have a few bucks to spend would be those in the 55 to dead demographic. Now stations have to go back to advertisers and convince them Oldies and/or Standards will work. Stations won’t get the obscene amounts of cash for a 60 second spot they once did but at least they may keep their heads above water until things improve.

That's pretty funny... Yocco, I'm not laughing at you but what I mean is 1) ESPN is "free" and at this time Nassau is having problems buying light bulbs to light the sales office. 2) The coverage area of 1320 is about a 5 mile radius – not like the old 1320 when they were 5000 watts. At just above light bulb power Nassau would be wise just to leave well enough alone since it would put additional burdens on already over-worked/over-burdened staff as it is (not that they would care about that). The amount of return for the effort wouldn’t be worth it - even in a booming economy.

(Just another point of view)
