WAEB 790 AM launches oldies format online on their website

You might want to check the WAEB homepage and click on "Changes Coming".

W A E B - The Party.
http://www.waeb.com/main.html It says: "Yes you heard it right, we're bringing oldies back. Listen to WAEB-AM for more details."

If you'll notice, it's just a tease on the website with no other changes. They'll probably follow the lead of WABC again and do a weekend oldies show or oldies on the weekend.

Or it could be that CC is getting ready to sell the station (along with 1470), and they're dumping the high priced syndicated talent.

They're running several commercials, saying things like "Barbara Streisand fans will be pleased", "WAEB will be a thing of the past real soon", "Liberals will rejoice", etc.. I have no idea what it means, or how soon "real soon" is. Sure would be a shocker, though, to see it go!

On WDIY this morning, they picked up the Express-Times story quoting Tuesday, 9 AM as the time when the "format change" would be revealed during Gunther's show. I couldn't find a link in the pennlive / express-times website, though. WAEB's website is acting up this morning.

To all members of this board: Aircheck this announcement on 790 AM Tuesday and post the audio here.

Wouldn't know how to post anything other than a transcript here, Julius!

I don't know how to do airchecks, but here's the scoop: WAEB has gone oldies, 24 hours per day........online! That's right, folks. The AM bandwith is remaining the same - talk radio, with all the same programs (Bobby Gunther Walsh, Glenn Beck, Rush, Hannity, etc.), but they added a link to their website where you can stream oldies 24 hours per day. You have to admit, the hype got people interested! Actually, it's not a bad idea. They are saying that it's not going to be the same ole oldies you normally hear on oldie stations, but some of the rare, less heard songs. Hope so! So that's the story on that!

Weren't they doing that on their WZZO HD-2 feed? I think I asked that question a week ago.

Anyway, it's a decent bandwidth...51 kbps

Is this really such a big deal? It's Oldies on their web site, for pete's sake! They teased this on the air for weeks. I never thought they were going to dump the format but I think this is a big nothing.

Updating... while I'm listening...

What's clever is that they've inserted local IDs, accu-weather (complete with jingle), traffic (at :51, claimed to be every 10 minutes), and local ads into the stopset. Traffic on a web-only stream seems a bit bizarre, though.

Sounds like a regular radio station...it will be interesting to see if they repurpose the local news.

The :50 stopset was only 3 minutes long...not bad at all...

Considering there are a gazillion ways to hear oldies online, about the only novelty is the local content insertion.

A novel idea that got people talking during the Fall Arbitron sweep. Look for this in many Top 100 market Clear Channel stations in the future, especially on AM. Here's why: Clear Channel is rolling out "national" music channels for it's HD-2 and 3 streams in their biggest markets. AM's don't have this advantage, because digital AM's don't have HD-2 alternate channel capability.

In addition, Clear Channel is rolling out music formats (400 of them!) for use on new Motorola equipped Ford vehicles with "Internet Radios." The only thing is...while "Internet based" ... they are only tunable for music to Clear Channel feeds. You can find them online, in fact, at http://www.clearchannelmusic.com/formatlab/oldies.htm.

The formats also go for new cellphone services being rolled out and Clear Channel is the music service provider.

In addition, Clear Channel is very specific about who can and who can't run Premier streams online, without a cost - ie: Rush, Drudge, Coast-to-Coast, etc. without paying through the nose to put these streams online, especially from non-Clear Channel owned affiliates.

I know...our station was told we would have to pay a couple of grand a month to stream Rush and we've been one of his first affiliates. A Clear Channel owned station 25 miles away streams only it's local morning and afternoon drive dayparts and says on its web site that due to contractual obligations ... it can't stream Rush, or other programming like Hannity, Clark Howard, etc. (largely because it would cost bucks to do so.)

With WAEB "stunting" this way online, it gives them another programming alternative, as there is, let's face it, an over-saturation of Rush et al up and down the dial. So, rather than have blank dayparts, why not use the 'net stream as an alternative revenue source, especially in light of oldies gone from the market over-the-air in Allentown, anyway?

I think it's a great idea and alternative for AM stations that will provide local "insertion" of spots, jingles, ID's, promos, etc.

The downside, though, is that it's Clear Channel controlled...and Clear Channel will hold on to money makers in the Top 100 markets like 'AEB.

I worked at WAEB during the Jeff Frank heyday when he was a night jock (and a good one) and Jerry Atchley, Ron Sotak et al managed. Was fun to see Doug Weldon's name, too, on this board and others still remembered from those days. I miss the Lehigh Valley and the WAEB "Good Guys."
