Did anyone think that WAEB would be doing a HD radio station with Oldies on it ?

Seems odd - the acronym HD and the word Oldies shouldn't even be in the same sentence...

It's like Britney and the word talent in the same paragraph... "Like puttin' an elevator in an outhouse... it don't belong..." :D

In that vein, I wonder if KYW will ever bother going HD?

Also, isn't Clear Channel already programming automated oldies on the HD2 channel of WYHM / 1470?

Knowing the way the radio biz is leaning toward becoming more of an aural brothel, sure why not? They can encode a lower stream for voice only type programming and - just like digital TV - can squeeze another 'format' onto another sub-channel providing an additional revenue source. So in reality, just like digital TV, it most likely will turn what would have been a higher quality listening experience into something that will sound closer to what FM is now but there will be 3,4 or 5 channels of 'same old, same old' available for your listening pleasure. Once again the public will be bamboozled into believing HD (High Definition) will sound better when in reality it’s just another good idea that turned into a scam to sell new products no one really needs anyway… :-\

Here's an idea - why not keep the 'main channel' the lilly-white, clean, safe programming where you can get the big cash flow and put the experimental programming on one of the sub-channels just to test it out... you know, all those songs that "Don't test well..." They may find out all that bad programming might just have an audience... (I'm available to consult on that idea if you're interested... Contact me here)

To the best of my knowledge, AM stations currently broadcasting in HD do not have HD-2 channels. Check ibiquity's Web site.
It's WZZO, 95.1, that has an HD-2 that's Oldies in the Lehigh Valley.

So, back to the guessing game for oldies and WAEB-AM. My guess: one or two oldies programs per weekend, maybe one Saturday nights and one Sunday mornings, sort of like what WABC does with oldies in NYC or what WPHT does with the Sinatra shows in Philly.

Oops... ya caught me. I believe you're right. If the AM station were to go completely digital the current analog bandwidth could carry another 1 or possibly 2 streams. It's been awhile since I've been exposed to the iBiquity propaganda...

Thanks for pointing that out. :)

Oh, and I just found out the "HD" in HD-Radio is a trademark of iBiquity and does not have any meaning. So I guess we can have fun with that - an acronym for the word 'nothing' - as in: "He said I'd get a raise but I know it means HD." or "If I do a good job I still get HD." or "HD from HD leaves HD." ;D
