WAEB to get competition?

Sources tell me that beginning Monday, another area radio station is switching to all talk during the morning drive. Things could be getting very interesting for morning talk radio in the Lehigh Valley!

It happened as predicted! Gunther has competition from 7 to 9 a.m.! "Morning Talk" with Jeff Dean debuted today on WGPA 1100 AM. He's getting tons of calls and he's taking a middle ground politically. Not left and not right.

Would he be considered a centrist or libertarian?

Seems that way. And we're not talking an ordinary WGPA jabroni that you guys pick on for being horrid on-the-air. I understand that Jeff Dean has been doing radio in the Valley for decades and is a big name in Allentown radio. His new talk show sounds great. Who knows. If they actually promote it and get sponsors, they actually might take away a few tenths of a point from WAEB-AM. I think there's more people out there who would enjoy listening to a centrist/Libertarian talk show host than one realizes. Right-wing radio is getting old.

78...really? C'mon. You're talking about a lot of "ifs" - 1. People actually finding 1100 AM on their radio. 2. Selling it. That would mean sales reps would have to believe in a product they have no experience with. Unlikely. 3. How many centrist/libertarians listen to WAEB *for* Gunther and would be willing to leave for a similar viewpoint to their own? Few and fewer. 4. How many who don't walk the conservative line would leave WAEB...and all their news/traffic/weather service elements at that time in the morning? Even fewer. 5. Name me one middle of the road politically host that is successful? Not talented...because everybody's got some talent. Name one who is a ratings winner.

When Lionel was on-the-air, he was middle-of-the-road and his show was successful. Lionel picks on both Republicans and Democrats. Randi Rhodes is basically middle-of-the-road. Perhaps a little too left to be considered straight centrist, but she's the first to criticize the Democrats when necessary. So there's some middle-of-the-road hosts that are/were successful to answer your question.

how much does Jeff Dean pay Jolly Joe to be on the air ?

Ha. Fooled ya. Guess what. He doesn't pay Jolly Joe a dime. Believe it or not, sources tell me Jolly Joe pays HIM, just like the other paid staff at WGPA. I'll agree with you though because I too was shocked, but I think Jolly's getting up there in age and he saw this as a good opportunity to maybe take a few bites out of WAEB's numbers. From what my sources tell me, Jeff approached Jolly with the idea and Jolly said to give it a whirl, as long as he's got some sponsors, which Jeff apparently does.

Jeff Deane long time DJ/talk show host in the Lehigh & Delaware Valleys dating back to the early 60's on the Big Top Popper-WHOL 1600 along with Jerry Deane, Jim Doughtery, and a very young *"Frantic" Freddie Milander. Then Jeff Deane went to WKAP-1320 did a music show and a talk show called Open Mike with Bob Gracen, the talk show had some legendary hosts Vernon Craig, Phillip Mike Bogart...including Chris Bailey. What i would give to airchecks of those guys. Then onto Philly for Jeff to WIOQ Poplar 102 and then back to now Super Kap until Jeff retired from the airwaves for awhile. Then onto WFMZ -account executive. Now my brain is fried.

*Frantic Freddie actually taught Gene Werley how to do record hops and dances, and Gene taught Fred how to operated the board at WYNS in Lehighton.
