WAGA NEWS

Word on the street is FOX 5 News is going to expand it news coverage with a weekend morning news and FOX 5 will be back at 11pm with a news. More like FOX News Edge. I hear Russ Spencer will be at the helm. I wish former Channel 11 Anchor Angela Robinson would make the leap back to her old stomping ground at WAGA 5 to do this 11pm News. I hope 11 brings it A game for 5 at 11:00

No matter what, WSB-TV will have three times the viewers of either station. WAGA and WXIA (let alone WGCL) will never beat the 800-pound gorilla in the market, no matter how hard they try.

I hope WAGA does put news on the weekends, I would rather watch them than any other station. ;D

Can someone explain to me the WSB draw. To me its virtually unwatchable. From Monica's overwrought handwringing introduction of a reporter standing in an empty parking lot doing an overwrought introduction of a package they recorded before they left the station. Or one of their highly touted investigative reports that is just a crime stoppers story. I can understand them standing on the shoulders of the greats that came before but with all the new people moving in you would think the 800 pound gorilla would have lost some weight.

What's up with the 28-year-old white guy subbing for John Pruitt this week? Way, way, way too young. Poor diction and zero presence. Really surprised he's at this level. I'd peg him for 46's morning guy at best. Though I'm sure he'll improve and have a nice career :)

WSB Dominance

Well, since Glenn Burns is in the AJC with the daily weather, NewsTalk 750 dominates the radio landscape and also cross-promotes Channel 2 Action News, I think the marketing side is one reason for their number one position. No one in Atlanta comes close to the on-air marketing machine that keeps the eyeballs glued to WSB for much of the broadcast day. BTW, I happen to like John Bachman and think he's gonna do well at Action News. It would be neat to see him groomed to replace John Pruitt.

WSB-TV has been promoting Fred Blankenship (morning anchor) and showing him around town like a king, even setting up a meeting with Andrew Young and stories at the Varisty. I belive WSB-TV is setting up Mr. Blankenship to take over for John Pruitt.

Gosh---sounds so much like WSB's sister station, WSOC-TV in Charlotte, except WSOC has Debi instead of Monica. Like WSB, WSOC is the undisputed #1 news station in Charlotte. Like WSB, they perfected the live newshot in front of dark, deserted buildings and an almost total reliance on crime stories. Really bad television which is painful to watch--to me, but there're still big #1.

I thought WBTV was the undisputed king in Charlotte--or is that no longer the case?

WBTV used to be dominant, UNTIL about 20 years ago. Using the WSB-TV template, WSOC became dominant in just about all day parts. A few years ago, WCNC-TV came close to pulling even with WBTV on the late newscast. I understand WBTV news has been making some gains in the last year or so, but WSOC still leads the day...

I was an avid WAGA fan until they became O&O. The graphics and color tone really don't appeal to me. They've aimed at another audience. GCL is my choice for a brighter newscast. Of course they could do better, but I like the youthfulness and freshness they bring to local news.
