WAGG on FM via Centerville/Cullman translator move?

Random poking around on Radio-Locator led me to notice that WAGG 610 has a translator tied to it: W251BG 98.1. The FCC confirms it, along with an application for it to move to Birmingham proper with a Tarrant license.

I wasn't sure if anyone had noticed this earlier.

WAGG is listed on the application but for now I think the station is still shown to relay WAY-FM from Harvest.

I'm skeptical of the move getting through since it'll be awful close to WTXT out of Tuscaloosa. They put a pretty good signal into the city and it might invite problems putting something on the air from B'ham on that frequency. 98.3 probably will skate through since it's probably the older application of the two. I noticed both employ directional antennas.

There's no way translators on 98.1 and 98.3 will work together. Maybe the 98.1 one will seek a frequency change? They could shoot for 97.9 but that's a pretty busy frequency, too.

I had forgotten about WTXT being at 98.1. Any translator in Birmingham at 98.1 would probably be rendered unlistenable south of the City due to WTXT. I know many times WTXT puts out a pretty good signal into the southern suburbs. A translator at 97.9 would present another issue with WHPH "The Peach" being on the adjacent frequency of 97.7.

Not to mention WVOK out of Anniston. It puts a decent signal into the eastern parts of the metro, like Trussville and Pell City.

Between WVOK, WHPH and WTXT, which is basically a local on the west side when it's running full power, I don't see how this translator application can be made to work. :-\

Wouldn't those translators being in such close proximity have to be at least second adjacent from each other in order for both of them to be approved and go on the air?

To be approved? No. To go on air? Probably. The FCC doesn't consider distance but signal contours and projected interference when determining whether to authorize translators. In other words, if it works on paper, the FCC will authorize the translator, but one or both may not work in the real world.
