WAGI is gone, opinión hola a WNOW-FM

WAGI flipped to Spanish this morning (4/21) as WNOW-FM.

We knew that it was only a matter of time before this would happen, but it's still sad, nevertheless. Good luck to Davidson Media with the station.

What a sad day in upstate radio... I remember talking to Mr Bud when I talked to him on ham radio and he was such a pleasure to talk to... I dunno if he is dead or not because the last time I talk to him was back in the nineties... I am sure Spanish will do well not only for the upstate, but for the QC as well if it is done right and not the way Davidson does business... While going to Spartanburg HS as a mainstreamed student I always remember the big games between the Vikings and Indians and WAGI always had one hell of a play by play team... IMO they had one of the broadcast teams I had ever heard... RIP WAGI just like the folks in Statesville who lost WFMX the city of Gaffney lost one hell of a family member... CC1

Just tuned in and noticed that it was in Spanish.

Yes, it really is a sad day in Upstate Radio, and I'm sure for the city of Gaffney also. That station was such a big part of that community, with the High School football games and all.

I think the same people who broker WOLI AM/FM also broker WNOW. They're sure going to have alot of Spanish coverage now. http://x.orbimedia.com/

Will Fabian Fuentes be doing mornings on the new La Rumba 105........

What is the deal with their AM over there...Are they simply putting the live read/polka morning show on there and the football games this fall...Will the 6pm dinner music be on the AM?.....How far from the txmitter does the AM signal get at night?

THE MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as I know, the 6pm Dinner music had been gone from WAGI for a number of years. I also believe the staff had shrunk pretty significantly over the past few months in anticipation of the FM moving. I was not a faithful WAGI listener, however it's still sad to see another community FM die. It was recently stated in another post that pretty much the only community FMs that will survive these days are the the 3 and 6kw ones. The "flamethrowers" just won't last in small towns. I guess 97.3 WKBC in North Wilkesboro (NC) is about the only 100kw left in this part of the country in a small town.

Unless they start the Gaffney High School games at 3PM you won't be hearing them on Gaffney Broadcasting's AM. WEAC is 1KW Daytime only on 1500KHz...

So to answer your question their txmitter does nothing at night.

GoUpstate.com now has a write-up on this story:

http://www.goupstate.com/article/20070422/NEWS/704220380/1051/NEWS01

The article quotes former SM Dennis Fowler as saying they are "working on" continuing Gaffney HS foobtall games "on an FM station again". Interesting...

And why on Earth would you change call letters for a Spanish station... to an English word? ???

Sad weekend for South Carolina. First, the Blue Angel crash, and now this...

My espanol is a bit rusty but I'm pretty sure "now" is "ahora"

They could certainly make it WHOR

The first Spanish station in Charlotte was WNOW-AM. For some odd reason, stations don't change their call letters in most cases when they go Spanish. The letters were used by a Contemporary Christian station which went under after an FM station did the same thing.

So it makes sense if you were a WNOW listener.
