WAGI -- Is the end near?

I don't regularly listen to 105.3 WAGI, though I've tuned in a couple of mornings this week. The on-air staffers are making some references to "the end" by saying things like this: During a "Today in History" segment the announcer stated the number of shopping days until Christmas and referenced that likely "we" wouldn't be here this Christmas. It's also regular fare on WAGI for the businesses to phone-in their own commercial and one business this morning made many references to her appreciation to the WAGI staff and what they had meant to her and she wished the two announcers the best in their future endeavors. In response to this, one of the announcers said that he'd be here Monday morning if his key still fit the door.

So, at least it sounds like they are not being restricted to keep any changes too secretive. It is indeed a sad day for small town community radio and as we've all said, "heritage" stations.

a CP they have to move their antenna and change the height would put a city grade signal over Charlotte.

The station is probably for sale.

As the great Hall&Oates song goes: "She's gone........whoa" Sure sounds like it :'(

Does anyone know who owns this station? It sounds like a Clear Channel-like screwup is coming soon... maybe a repeat of what happened to WFMX?

It's owned by Gaffney broadcasting, Inc and RICHARD G. KINARD is the Chief Executive Officer.

I wonder whats going to happen to WEAC 1500 when WAGI-FM is sold and moved..

I would suppose that the AM (WEAC) will try to trudge on when WAGI is spun off...nothing has officially been said that it will be sold, but why else would the tower/transmitter and COL be moving??? But a couple of specific questions...is WEAC a "strict" daytimer or are they able to stay on unlimited at some nighttime "butane lighter" power? Also--and I posed this in another thread--why would it appear that Mr. Raymond Parker's will is not being adhered to in this whole process? Here's part of a story from over a year ago from the Gaffney Ledger where a part of Mr. Parker's will is cited:

It remains unclear how a clause in Raymond Parker’s will, in which he outlines his desire for the broadcasting business to remain in Gaffney, might affect the relocation.

The will reads, in part, “Upon the death of my said wife, BRIGHT G. PARKER, I direct that my Trustees then acting shall sell the capital stock of Gaffney Broadcasting, Inc., or sell the radio station business then owed by the said corporation, at the best reasonably available price. It is not my intent that the value of the business be sacrificed in order to make an immediate sale, but rather that my Trustees commence an orderly and effective effort to sell the same at a price commensurate with its true value within a reasonable period of time. I also direct that the terms of any sale shall be such that the broadcasting business shall not be moved from the Gaffney, South Carolina area, unless due to change in circumstances it is then no longer the sole or dominant local radio station in the Gaffney community.”

Is there a legal loophole in this will or are wills just no longer binding?

Eric

Well....WAGI is certainly not the "sole" radio station in Gaffney, and though I'm sure there will be many who will disagree, I doubt it is the "dominant" station either.

I would suspect the terms of the will could be voided once the sale was completed. It would be extremely hard to enforce those terms on a subsequent owner, particularly in light of the desire to make sure the value of the station is not diminished by the sale.

I heard another on-air "hint" this morning...

As I tuned in WAGI at around 7:40 this morning, both announcers were in an exchange and making some references to the "sophisticated folks" over in Charlotte...I have no idea as to whether they were commenting on one of their many live morning commericals, a news story, or what(since I had JUST tuned in). But to wrap up this portion of their chat, one of the announcers stated, "well, they will be real sophicasted when they get their new spanish radio station."

As stated at the beginning of this thread, they apparently are not being secretive about WAGI's future.

God Please... not a Spanish Station......

Radio One will be buying the station if the station is successfully mvoed and builds out the CP.. they certainly won't be doing spanish.

We need another urban/hip hop station about like we need a Spanish station. If Radio One gets it, my guess is Rhythmic AC

If R1 buys it, they will probably move WQNC from 92.7 to 105.3 to compete head-to-head with V101.9, now what they do with 92.7, who knows, maybe a smooth jazz format or straight urban format to compete with Power 98.

Word I am hearing that Davidson Media is buying it and it will be Spanish. I guess they are waiting for the pending application to change the city of license to come through...

If Davidson Media buys the station, then I would expect it to be an FM simulcast of WNOW going 24 hours. Seeing how WNOW rates as a daytimer, a strong 24-hour FM with a good signal in town could be huge. What would Tremenda do? 102.3 is still very weak in the area.

Aslo, with the AM/FM simulcasts, could one of the AM's end up becoming something different such as Spanish news/talk or Spanish Christian?
