WAGL-Wherefore Art Thou?

Has this station gone dark? I am no longer able to detect a signal on 1560AM where before it was fairly strong in Columbia. Radio-Locator.com does not indicate that it is silent and I have been unable to locate any FCC data that the station is silent. However, I found that the owner, "Len" Phillips passed away last fall. Anyone have any info?

Don't rely on Radio-Locator. On either this site or the other one there was an argument about whether it is reliable.

And I've found outdated information there more than once.

As near as I can figure WAGL has gone dark - here is my source:

I have many fond memories of listening to WAGL back in the day. Now there is just silence.

Steve.

Haven't been on in a long time. It's funny AM stations going dark, I keep trying to get one (about 1KW) for my translator but every one I have checked with wants 75 thousand or more for one and that's never going to happen in today's market. I will keep trying. I tried to get WABV while Mark when he was still alive but his lawyers wouldn't go down to a reasonable price. Now Mark has passed on WABV still shows license to his broadcasting company but as far as I know it hasn't had a signal in years, a transmitter or a building. However I will keep trying.

I saw a recent URL stating (4) AM Stations in T.N. that went Dark several years ago, finally had their Towers yanked/cut down (Circa 2015). The Article stated the Towers would be Recycled to form a Bridge (?!). I've no idea what kind of Bridge they refer to but perhaps AM has finally managed to reach its End-Of-Life Status. History In The Making! --- Steve.

From "the other site":

“And PALMETTO BROADCASTING SYSTEM, INC.’s license for WAGL-A/LANCASTER, SC has been cancelled at the licensee’s request; owner LEN PHILLIPS passed away in SEPTEMBER 2014.”

Was wondering about this station. Figuring it's a 50000 watt daytime station, someone in the Charlotte market would have wanted to buy it.

On the other hand, with the directional signal, I don't even think it could be heard in Charlotte. Given the absence of WBSC, I would think they could change the directional signal somewhat.

That signal was very good sky wave, especially down here on the coast. You could hear it all the way to northern and central FL in the fall in critical hours.
