WAIM-AM 1230 News talk/ Rick Driver

I find it interesting that WAIM-AM (the station I started with in the 1960`s) beat local Anderson rivals WRIX am/fm and WANS in the local books. WAIM is not owned with these other stations. WAIM has a rich and storied local history. It was the sister station to 101.1 (formerly wcac, waim-fm, wckn now wroq). Anderson/Independent Mail founder Wilton E. Hall started this staion in 1925. It has been very controversial in recent years locally, as the morning show host Rick Driver has been at war with the Anderson County Adm. Joey Preston. This station does have a large local following. I know that WAIM announced in the paper awile back that they had a FCC application to start a WAIM FM again. Is this in relation to the WGOG 96.3 dial switch and transmitter relocation to near Anderson? Will Art Sutton sell wgog fm to waim?
 
Alot of folks must be listening to WAIM AM 1230 for them to beat WRIX AM/FM and WANS-AM 1280. I believe that WAIM even beat out WCCP AM 104.9 in Clemson! Now that is saying alot. WAIM has been doing news/talk since 1992. They have the top shows and local. They even snatched Bob Bierman away from WRIX. Bob actually worked at WAIM back around 1970-1974 for former owner and founder Wilton E. Hall. WRIX had over taken WAIM (the long time Anderson ratings leader) back in 1983 when WRIX`s Matt and Bev show caught on. However, in the latest book WAIM beat all of the FM 103 inc. ststions. WAIM is owned by Palmetto Broadcasting (I believe that Bob Allison is the owner). It is something that WAIM knocked out WRIX/WANS in the latest book. The Rick Driver Morning show on WAIM has really caught on.

A few facts... I subscribe to the county Arbitron reports. WRIX-FM is still way ahead of WAIM by a large margin.

WGOG is not for sale. If you ever read I sold WGOG, the same article will mention I have retired from radio and at age 45, I am not planning that any time soon.

WAIM went on the air in 1935, not 1925. The first station in SC, WSPA, did not go on the air until 1929 and was licensed in 1930. WAIM had a CP to be a daytimer at 620 on the dial but switched to 1210 to have nighttime power. 1210 moved to 1230 in 1941 when all AM stations shifted on the dial as part of the expansion of the AM dial to add 1510 to 1600. WAIM had no competition from 1935 to 1949 when WANS went on the air with 1KW daytime only. It added nighttime in the early 1950s at 1KW and went to 5KW days a few years later. I've been told it was a tough road for WANS for many years as the Anderson Independent Mail would cause their advertisers grief if they also ran on WANS instead of co-owned WAIM. However, apparently enough advertisers disliked being strong armed and kept WANS going. One of their earlier managers told me that the owner of WANS was always at odds with Wilton Hall who owned WAIM and the newspaper and that was the WANS' owner's reason for getting into radio. Hall was very active in politics and surely had many people in town who didn't like him..enough to make WANS profitable.
 
Art, what do you plan to do with WGOG? I understand that you aren`t selling it. But, are you moving the transmitter to near Anderson? Would you consider running True Oldies on it? This area does need a good Oldies station. In Anderson, we can`t even pick up WOLT!!!!!!! Help!!!!!!!!!! Wgog switched to Jones radio Oldies in 1999. I don`t think that they did any live local oldies shows though. However, I remember that when they signed on in 1991, they were live and played 50/60`s oldies mixed in with 70`s/80`s until about 1994 when they went automated soft a.c. Art, do you know about WRIX/WANS switching to Oldies?
 
Art, by the way I swear that I saw the last book and it showed WAIM beating out WRIX AM/FM and WANS am. I assume that it was the same company that you were looking at. I know that it was the latest numbers. Please double check..... I do know that WRIX has let some people go after these latest numbers came out. Do you listen to WAIM?
