WAIS/WSEO - Nelsonville

I know it's not Columbus Metro, but this is the closest board.Anybody have any info on the entire staff at WAIS/WSEO down in Nelsonville all losing their jobs in one mass firing??? ???

Big staff shakeup at Nelsonville radio stations called necessary for bottom line 2006-05-01 By Jim Phillips Athens NEWS Senior Writer WAIS/WSEO radio station owner Eugene "Joe" Edwards confirmed Sunday that as of this coming Thursday, he is clearing out the entire staff at the popular Nelsonville-based radio stations. He characterized the move as unfortunate but necessary to keep the business profitable. Click here:http://athensnews.com/issue/article.php3?story_id=24287

Now for the rest of the storyOn the Wednesday night before the mass firings, Joe Edwards suffered a heart attack. Last word was that he is recovering but will be off work for a few weeks. The firings took place as scheduled. The news article pretty much says it all. The staff became too large for the sales to support. Joe is a good business person and did what he needed to do to save the stations. I wish him well.MB

Best wishes and prayers for Joe and his speedy recovery.any ideas what he is running on the stations right now? I suspect automated music? satellite feed? I am not down in the logan/athens area to check them.--Matt

My best wishes to Joe as well. Knowing him the way that I do, I suspect that he'll be back to the grindstone as soon as he can.I'm wondering if Joe will just go satellite. SEO could go with a hot country format and maybe do a live morning show. AIS could go either way ... a Classic Country satellite format or a news/talk. Of course, if you're going news talk, you'd have to stay away from the pricey shows like Limbaugh.

All of you on here saying this is unfortunate for the station blah blah blah are hyprocrits! If Clear Channel or CBS totally cleaned house like this guy did you would be ripping that company a new one, yet with these stations you feel sorry for everyone and with the guy good health. Something is wrong with this picture!!!

Joe is extremely loyal to people who are loyal to him. For him to do this, there must have been other things going on besides just the financial aspect. A company like Clear Channel makes decisions like this with no regard to how it affects those losing their jobs. I'm sure Joe agonized about this decision.

The Edwards family has always been very loyal and hospitable to their employees. And "Radiologist" is right, in that something had to happen to provoke this. Something did happen. Out of respect for that very fine family, who in years past have hand-delivered paychecks and comfort food to some sick employees, I'll not divulge what happened last fall. It was none of their faults and was a very cruel hand that life dealt each and every one of them, through a family tragedy. It doesn't surprise me to the least that Joe or Sharon have suffered negative health effects. My heart is with them. I worked for them for a while, though I've not stepped foot in that station in years. They're fantastic people. Having said that, Joe could have taken a different route, including possibly splitting up the combo and letting his now-former Ops Mgr purchase the FM. People could have then kept their jobs, at least for the most part. Joe has always believed a little more in his toys than he should have, but no one was immune to this unique sweeping. He fired a lifelong friend that day. It's not the first time Joe has "cleaned house". And house-cleaning happens at all radio levels, business models and market sizes.

I am sure Joe did what he had to do. People say others here would not be as sympthetic if Clear Channel etc did this, if some reason Clear channel lets say the entire staff/sales/promo dept of WNCI go tomarrow, I'd feel as equaly bad as I do for joe's staff, anytime someone looses a job its rough, not just for the person who was let go but also for the person letting that person go. My wishes to everyone and hopefully will see these two stations contiune on servicing their community, in todays radio world, these sorta small stations could easly be sweept up by some Relgious broadcaster or corporate company where they would be nothing more than a jukebox ran from 2000 miles away.--Matt

Dang. Thom Williams and I worked together for a while at the old KIX-103 in Parkersburg, West Virginny. I'm sorry to hear that he apparently lost his gig in Nelsonville.
