... hang on just a second before jumping on the bash "Mix 106.7" train.
I just sampled the station for the first time during the last hour, and (I know I'm gonna be flamed for this ... just remember, consider the source ... I'm your loving easy listening music fan), 106.7 is now my second favorite station in Central PA after WSJW.
A couple of observations ...
1) Kinda unique playlist. More of a retro-based AC or soft oldies format than what I would consider soft AC. Kinda similar to Philly's WSNI, but a little softer, esp. since WSNI has gone a tiny bit harder in recent months. "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" sounded very nice about an hour or two ago on 106.7. The Bee Gees also always have a soft spot in my heart. Heard them too. I only hope Citadel doesn't tweak it harder like Cheap Channel is doing in Philly with WSNI.
2) Does 106.7 fill a void? Actually, yes. It's a bit newer than 96.1. A bit older and softer than 100.1, 101.3, and 103.3. And it's a nice signal.
3) My only MAJOR complaint at this juncture is the crappy name. "Mix 106.7?" It sounds like a mainstream AC station playing Dido and 3 Doors Down. Weirdly enough, Citadel used the Mix name for awhile on their Allentown property WLEV a number of years back, when the station was playing Will Smith and Nickelback.
Why on earth choose a crap name like that for a station playing easy tunes from decades ago? I'd rather hear "Soft 106.7" or "Easy 106.7." I think I know why they didn't go that route. Would the public want to sample a new station claiming to be "soft" and "easy?" Probably not. But "Mix" sounds good. Nevertheless the name doesn't fit this format.
Why not "Mellow Rock 106.7" or "Easy Rock 106.7" (please no "Soft Rock," the name is too over used).
That aside, the moral of the story, the new 106.7 actually is refreshing. I gotta give 'em credit. We'll see where it goes.
