Waiting for New CHR for Bangor....

franksandhotdogs said:
dude, most markets only have one CHR and Bangor is no exception, you still got Z107.3. Sure Z is owned by Cumulus and music is picked by Jan Jeffries in ATL, so it's a bit behind on the hot new songs, but it's better than nothing. :)

dude, i think i know I still have WBZN. Re-read what I think about this in earlier posts on this subject. If the Z could go back to more sat. shows likes AT40 and less "Retro Pop Reunion" then I would be satisfied. And... pitching....... more............

You mean the teens that "don't have access to radios"? That is one of the most clueless statements I've seen in a long time...even for you, Benn. If you live in a glass house...

Are you honestly trying to make me mad? I honestly think so. I said in my posts that MOST 14 year olds DONT have access to RADIOS. Of course, their parents do (hopefully), and SOME MAY HAVE THEM, but the majority DON'T. At least try and fight things I actually said.... rather than things I didn't

As far as I can recall, no one here ever called CHR 'stupid'. The opinions may have been different from yours, yes, but 'stupid'? And then you come out with the above comment? How's that working out for ya?

Hey, how come I can't say sports is stupid? Yes, no one said CHR is stupid, but still.... i'm entitled to my opinion.
Plus, c'mon, even if you don't think it is needed in the market then it must not be your favorite format? Or else you would be agreeing with me?

ben...

It's not going to happen anytime soon.  All the radio-info.com posts in the world won't change that.

Most markets the size of Bangor (and smaller) only can support one CHR, when there's more revenue available going after a more lucrative demographic (25-54).  CHR can and does make money, if done right, since it's going after a smaller pie (there's more revenue available in a 18-34 pie divided up in...let's say two pieces, than a 25-54 pie divided up in 8 pieces), but in this time of downsizing and cost-cutting...most companies don't want to take risks.

Though 18-34 has tons of disposable income, because Arbitron's pathetic way of measuring radio listening for young adults (I heard they're going to start calling cell phones...but I trust that as much as the Bush administration), it's hard to get a somewhat accurate sampling.

Watch what you say, I like sports talk! ;D

Your passion is admirable, albeit self-blinding.

I'm not trying to make you mad, just calling shenanigans on the "access to radios" claim. It's ridiculous. I've never met a child over roughly age 10 that didn't own a radio. A lot have clock radios in their rooms, and many have them built into MP3 players, excluding Ipods of course. Quite a few control the dials in Mom's SUV as well.
Granted, the days of the "pocket transistor" or Walkman are long over, and Radio has become just another media source to many people, not just teens/tweens. However, it's still alive and kicking. My 4 nieces (ages 8-13) own radios, as does my tween daughter-and they use them. My friends kids all have them too.
Your passion for Radio frequently dislodges your rational thinking. Learn the business first, then you'll be taken more seriously.

But seriously, NHRadio, how many of those 10-14 year olds who may have a clock radio actually LISTEN to the radio. Yes, just about everyone has a clock radio/alarm in their rooms but who actually takes the time to turn on that clock radio with the bad speaker and tuning. Unfourtuately not many. Since some Mp3 players now have built in FM radio's, radio is becoming somewhat more popular than it was, i guess. But most 10 years don't listen to the radio. As sad as that maybe, usually (especially up here where I live), they would say the radio is boring and plays crappy music. Even the Z in Bangor with their occasional 90's song may not live up to 14 year olds as wish it did. They would rather hear a Jonas Brother or Miley Cyrus song instead.
Dislodge my rational thinking? I think your thinking (hmm...) is a little unrational, most 10 years don't listen to the radio unless in the car with their parents. I may not know the advertising side of the business, but I do know what the people (in my age group at least) want and I really don't think it is sports on the radio. We have ESPN, we have Fox Sports, we have NESN etc. We don't have Top-40 on TV (at least basic cable). And don't say MTV because I barely ever see Music Videos anymore on there, it's most just a Cribs re-run i think.
