I guess I'll make a small comment.

KHHL first mistake was letting Joaquin Garza walk. Their second mistake was Hiring Hector Velazquez.

Austin is getting old....

Althought Austin has the image of being a city full of young and creative liberals.... The numbers seem to show that news/talk and oldies are "ruling" the top of the latest trends. All things considered, Austin is a very diverse community.

Keep Austin Weird

That's kind of depressing, looking at KLBJ AM on top. Two mediocre local shows and Rush Limbaugh....you'd think that Austin would have better taste than that.

And as for the unrated non-coms, I thought they weren't included in the book?

Nope. The non-coms are indeed rated. However, you can't get them from R&R or AllAccess. In the Spring '08 survey, KUT had a 5.3, and KMFA had a 2.2 12+.

If you think Austin should have better taste than KLBJ, it's important to keep everything in perspective. It may have the 12+ ratings lead, but conservative talk doesn't even get an 8 share in Austin when you add up the numbers of KLBJ, KJCE and WOAI. In other words, more people may be listening to KLBJ than any other single Austin station, but more than 92% of the audience is listening to something else!

Don't forget to give the news department its props. A lot of folks make the effort to tune in at the top of the hour even if they don't care for the talk show. After all what radio news choices do we have in Austin?

I agree, but 12+ obviously includes the 12 to 24 bunch, so it means that the 25+ and the 35+ numbers have got to be big. Really big. I don't see little munchkins listening to KLBJ.

KLBJ with substantive local news and local sports. Local radio and localism - You can't beat it, it translates to bigger ratings.

It's sad that the Austin American Statesman can't reinvent itself to survive. Localism is a good thing, ask the folks at The Chronicle.

I haven't seen the demo specific numbers for Austin, but I suspect a substantial portion of KLBJ's audience is 55+. Even though Austin is a younger-than-average market, I'd have to think KLBJ is suffering from the same problems other AM talkers are having, which is that they're rapidly aging out of the money demo as AM just doesn't attract younger listeners.

It's true. Older listeners can be hyper-loyal. That's been the success of Fox News Channel. They don't have nearly the cume of CNN. But the viewers they do have settle into their comfort zone and will watch for hours on end pumping up the quarter-hours. The downside is that the commercials reach the same older people over and over.

You don't se the 18-24 or the 25-34 or even much of the 25-44 listening, either. 79% of KLV (AM)'s audience is over 45, in fact.

The propblem, as with all AM news talkers, is that KLBJ's aundience is in its majority over 55. As a rule, thee is no agency business for 55+, and local direct accounts that understand the ROI on older listeners don't use such staitons either.

Newspapers and AM radio are irrelevant to most people under 40 or so.
