Wake Up Miller Communications!

While we're on this Miller thread below about WICI, I just wanna say to the heads at Miller who look at this board, (I know they do) Wake up! Have fun with your stations again! Put some life into them! With this website makeover you guys are going through, I hope this means your going through station makeovers as well. Hell, you guys are doin a good job with WWKT, why not do something with the rim-shotter for Columbia besides make it a station that gets in the way? Ok, I'm through venting, I'm not trying to bash anyone, because I know first of all Miller is local and very capable of doing good radio because we have ALL seen it, show us that magic again.

Barring a complete re-arrangement of things at that end of the dial, 93.9 is stuck exactly where it is. It cannot move closer to Columbia because of 93.5 and 94.3.

I wasn't referring to them moving any closer, actually their signal isn't ALL that bad in Columbia. What Im talking about is try another format, have fun with their stations, instead of making them automated jukeboxes with Bad Dog as their names.

Exactly!...How do you get noticed when you don't have $ for marketing? Go Crazy..take chances...have FUN...do things that get the phones ringing and the other media to take notice...free publicity. it still works.

I think the days of having fun even for smaller companies are a dying breed... Don't want to rock the boat I guess... Miller could do some unique things with his stations and still make money, but I guess safe is the way to go now a days... CC1

He is faced with the problem of Sumter pretty much becoming a shadow market for Columbia. When you can get WWDM, WCOS, B106, WNOK, WLTY and SCERN, at minimum, when you are in Sumter, there aren't a lot of adult-leaning mass appeal format choices if you're not going to go really local and dig. Sure, you can get adventurous, but you'd need Columbia's population to support a niche format. At least that is my thoughts, anyways.

Of course, look at Camden, which has always been a Columbia shadow market, and WPUB does exceedingly well -- with a wide-appeal format (Oldies being the closest that you can get to MOR in the 2000's) that is geared to the tastes of the folks that live in Camden and the station does local news and has really dug into the community.

Steve I think you hit the nail right on the head... Lets take a look at what is now WSIM but when it launched was WKHT in Bishopville... The owners promised the moon, the stars, etc to the community and after a year left them high and dry with the same results in Sumter... A lot of people felt burned or scammed from what I was told thus the reason people were not willing to support a lot of stations in that area... As for WPUB it is and always has been a part of the local community and very involved as well that is why WPUB has been so successful... The only person who could have gave PUB a run for the money would have been George Buck owner of GHB broadcasting... He had longtime resident and former radio station owner Larry Hatcher running what at the time was WAME 1130 AM... Larry picked up where he left off after leaving WPUB a few years earlier, but his untimely death gave WAME a major setback... A few other people came in and tried to make a go of WAME, but it went dark again until the sports animal came on the air before it was sold... That is why PUB does so well it is like an old friend you know it is always there even if it is on auto pilot with its oldies format... CC1
