wake up

Cathy is out at the end of the year Christine and Rob left already. The station did nothing to retain them. The ND's been at 8 for about a year. He made no bones about wanting to revamp the mornings. You can't blame him. In terms of ratings, in the evenings, 8 comes way closer to the competition than in the mornings. But if you change the talent, you should change the show. Wake Up only has two on-air people and one and a half producers for two hours. It must be painful. I think the show is a work in progress. I hope the ND has a plan, but it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't. I would also not be surprised to see more changes in the new year, good and bad.

Channel 8

Does she have another job lined up or not?

It is very rare these days that a radio or TV station will counter-offer. The reason being that 9 times out of 10 the station can hire a replacement for less money.

The last book I saw both 10 and 13 had twice the number of people watching them than 8 does at both 6 and 11pm. The only time 8 did well was against Channel 10 at noon. The reason being that the lead-in show for WROC's Noon News is the popular "The Price is Right."

Channel 8 is a revolving door when it comes to on-air talent. And that is the main reason the station remains in third place behind 13 and 10. Viewers get used to certain people and poof, they are gone. As for personnel changes the ax has been falling already. The Executive Producer was canned in September and the contract of one of 8's best reporters is up for negotiation very soon. That person told me they wonder if they are going to have a job. So you can rest assured that more heads will roll at Channel 8 in the near future. Unfortunately for 8 some of the best people will be shown the front door which, in my opinion, will result in the station’s ratings dropping even further then they are now.

Re: Channel 8/Nexstar

This is typical of Nexstar...letting the good people walk...or Nexstar showing them the door...then hiring inexperienced, bargain-basement talent. What else is new? I wish Nexstar would do what Pedro Martinez wanted the Yankees to do..."f-ing disappear." This opinion is coming from a former Nexstar employee/victim. It's obvious Nexstar doesn't care about their stations, their employees, or their viewers. It's pathetic. Every time I read something about a Nexstar station that isn't good, I get annoyed. It's a damn shame that the good talent is being shown the door because of cheap, uncaring, penny-pinching corporate puppets.

And Sh*tclair isn't any better.

Nexstar isn't the only company that treats employees this way. As long as there are people out there willing to work for next to nothing just to be on TV, or radio, you will find this trend will continue.

The best kept secret in the business is that a lot of jobs are going begging right now, because the poor pay and difficult conditions are causing more people either to leave the business, or opt not to enter it in the first place.
It can take months now to fill fulltime and part-time jobs which used to attract droves of applicants. A lot fewer people now, want to come forward to join a business that for all the ego satisfaction that being on the air may provide, doesn't let you have the assurance that you'll be able to live decently and pay your bills.

So believe it or not, we are about to enter a period of severe talent crunch.

At the current rate, so few people are being recruited to replace those who are retiring from the business or leaving for other lines of work that within the next few years CheapChannel and its corporate brethren may not even be able to keep the voicetracking machines running, because there won't be enough voices left to do the tracks. And I'm not even talking about the shortage of sales and administrative people that has caused stations to start begging for applicants over the air.
