WAKR 1590 AM 70th Anniversary

I have not seen this posted here yet, I just wanted to let all of you vintage aircheck collectors/listeners know that Friday October 8th, WAKR 1590 AM will celebrate their 70th birthday and will be playing host to a lot of memories from the past including early air checks, history facts about WAKR and they will also have special interviews from those who worked there over the years, plus they will be featuring each decade of music, jingles, etc. of WAKR's past beginning with the Ray Horner morning show.

audience. The audience passed by their 70 a loooong time ago.

" I remember when WAKR signed on, I was 12, no 14"....

Id be willing to bet Chuck and chuck are going to produce some great imaging.
 
Cool! I'm sure I'll be one of the very few people tuning in from a college dorm room, but my radio geekiness won't let me miss retrospectives, I love those!
 
Friday Oct 9 will spotlight the 1950s.

Monday Oct 11 - 60s
Tuesday Oct 12 - 70s
Wednesday Oct 13 - 80s
Thursday Oct 14 - 90s
Friday Oct 15 - 00s to present day.

Chuck Collins gets all the credit on this one. He's done a fantastic job and worked very hard to put this together, from imaging to features to interviews and more. I haven't heard any of the produced vignettes/imaging audio so I too am looking forward to this as well.

I provided vintage audio and workparts when able. I dubbed in over 300 50s-60s songs from my library. So those will be fun to hear.
 
The 90s will be interesting. That was when the corporate owners out of Philadelphia fired Adam Jones, Bob Friend and Bill Hart and brought Rush Limbaugh to Akron. The station was #1 in 1991 when the Gulf War took place, then enter Limbaugh. Never #1 again.

Fortunately, Thom Mandel saw sense when he bought the place. :)
 
Akron's really lucky to have a station like WAKR around - with stable, solid ownership and a full-service news and oldies format. Especially given that its' former sister station in Dayton, WONE/980, has been reduced to an afterthought in the market.
 
As a staff member at 1590 WAKR since the 1980's....I really appreciate the great comments from all of you folks here on the Cleveland board about our station, and WAKR's 70th anniversary on October 16th.

I feel the way all of you do: northeastern Ohio is so lucky to have a true full-service, local AM radio station like WAKR.

The station has one of the largest local radio news/information staffs in the midwest...and is heavily involved in community activities and organizations.

And, an ex-d.j./PD/etc....I just LOVE the fact WAKR is an AM station that plays a heavy helping of music too...and not just the same 250-300 over-played songs on most "oldies" stations.

Soon, there will be a special website with audio and video all about WAKR's 70th years on the air....including rare airchecks. I don't know the specific website URL yet...but, if you check WAKR's main website you should find a link in the next few days.

Finally...I too salute WAKR PD and WAKR/WONE/WQMX Operations Manager Chuck Collins for his work on this anniversary website, and his tireless dedication to the on-air sound of WAKR. As a person who works with Chuck...he's as good a person as he is a quality radio programmer.

When I'm in Akron, I listen to WAKR. It's like putting on an old pair of shoes. Comfortable music. Comfortable hosts. Solid information.

I was just thinking today on the way to work how nice it would be to have a full service FM without a studio of hosts laughing the morning away. Or their polar opposite that nothing but sweeps of music and little if any information.

Looking for a good solid friendly host, great information elements and someone I can trust.
