WAKR

Starting this, since it makes no sense to go in-depth about the legendary WAKR in a WNWV column.

Looking at the Radio-locator patterns, it seems that a little Southwest of Cleveland, I should be able to pick it up fairly well. Last evening (after 6pm), it was coming in very poorly. More then one station with the same poor audio level.

I don't know if they've reduced power or what, but I was recently heading towards Lodi from Akron and once I got around Seville on I-76 they were fading in and out and once I got around Cloverleaf high school it was basically gone. Same way towards Cleveland during the daytime even, once I was north of I-271 it was almost a memory. On the other hand I was able to pick it up well south of Canton during the daytime but seeing as how their towers are at the RT 224/I-77 split and it's a straight shot down I-77 that doesn't surprise me.

Another fun thing about WAKR, when the old Lynn movie theater was located near South Plaza on Waterloo rd. it was just about within peeing distance of the towers. We used to be able to pick up WAKR on the phones anytime we tried to use them. Not even Ohio Bell could figure out how to stop it so we usually had callers asking us to turn down the radio so they could hear us and we told them our phone system WAS picking up the radio station and we could do nothing about it but yell over the phone to try and overcome it. Sometimes you could barely hear it, other times it was loud enough to be distracting.
