WALE 990 CHANGES TO JAZZ

It appears that as of this morning 990 AM is simulcasting 102.7 FM in Nasrragansett, whose format is jazz music. The announcer on the station said that it will be that way for a while. It sounds good to me, they need a jazz station in this area.

If done right, it could get 990 back into the book. I remember it did crack the ratings under the WEAN call in the '80's when we started to add personality to the original Al Ham version of the Music of Your Life. We had contests, listener call ins, mixing some jazz into the big band and standards music. I was overnight there at the time.

Steve "The Traffic Troll" Conti doesn't own either station, him and his "cronies" are leasing 102.7 WAKX Narraganset Pier frfom Davidson Media Group.

Cumbe Communications (Peter Arpin, the Van line king and owner of WARL 1320) must be desperate to keep 990 on and I doubt Steve is paying for this. Rumor had it 102.7 wouldnt be jazz much longer, as the jazz group was failing to pay their bills. The eletricity on WALE's transmitter site alone is probably more then the LMA payment on 102.7!

I wonder where WAKX 102.7's studio is? Their website claims Providence... isn't that more then 25 miles from their COL? What's the point of even claiming Providence in their coverage, 102.7 can't be heard there, unless a certain 250 Watt Transmitter that was in the non comm band got retuned and put on the air somewhere west of Providence.

Paul, WAKX has its studios in the WALE building at 1185 North Main St., Providence
Its Websit shows this:http://www.festivaljazz1027.com. It may well be the best thing to happen to 990 inm years to put =jazz back on AM...

I don't believe that website has anything to do with Steve Conti's version of Jazz on 102.7 WAKX. That was for the previous format, the site was just never taken down. The station is now called "102.7 Jazz FM."

Paul, Jazz FM's studio is on North Main St in Providence. It is in the same office as 990 WALE and WKKB 100.3.
I help out from time to time. Erlene the station manager is a very nice person and Steve answers to her and her husband Greg.

The halls are haunted by the Battaglia's.When I entered that building a few months ago for the first time in 10 year's. I thought I heard Francis's foul mouth and a fogged up window in the shape of Steve White or was that the image of him on my bagel that morning. I forget.
Any way Jazz FM's simulcast on WALE has brought him into the Providence market.
By the way because I help out over at WALE/WAKS does that make me a cronnie?

And for what it's worth, I was Steve's mentor when 990 was WEAN. Taught him how to read copy and showed him some engineering basics. The fun with him continued as we both worked together at the original incarnation of 99.3, WBLQ. I was for a while its chief engineer. Yo, Troll!
