WALE 990

Reason the juice gets dumped into the Atlantic is protecting the 990 here in Philly, plus 1st ajacent to WSUB 980 in Groton......

Well 990 sure seems like a poor choice frequency for a 50,000 watt signal then. That's an awful lot of power to waste so that fish can listen.

WALE is doomed from the get go. i like the idea of what they are doing but the fundimental issue is that it is a 50KW station that transmits directional to the water! In comparison to say, 630 which I can get all the way into New London CT and up through Boston 990 doesnt go anywhere unless you are a boat in the atlantic!

See their transmitter pattern http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WALE&service=AM&status=L&hours=D

I scratch my head at the stupidity of the FCC sometimes.

If all of the diplexing schemes that have been floated here are either technically too difficult, or too expensive......then maybe the answer is for WALE to get off 990 altogether.

Could they possibly apply to get re-assigned to the expanded part of the AM band?

Common sense would argue that if they could get onto the expanded band with 10KW non-directional days / 1KW non-directional nights, they would probably RUN...not walk...to turn in the 990 license....especially if they had access to a tower site in or near Providence.

Wondering if anyone knows what is going on at WALE as well??? My office has been tuned in to 990 to listen to the Midday Madness Show to my surprise. They are mixing talk and music and seem to be having a lot of fun, the crew loves it-seems they are more for FM though. Are they getting paid? Steve Bianchi in the morning with that old time news sound with some girl and Big John Bina in the afternoon with oldies and a guy with Jazz in the morning. Are they having an identity crisis and is someone ever going to get any juice out of that antiquated tower? ::) Haven't heard Bina or the girl this week....what is going on??

I'll grant you stations like this do have fun but that's because nothing is at stake and I'm sure everything is short term and temporary so enjoy it while it lasts. Big John's name is on the website but no photo. There is a lesbian dream queen show that's going to be scheduled. Maybe they're after Coast's gay audience. I also see they're on myspace and twitter and have a blogspot listed on their website. If it's free they have it.

As of yesterday (9/1)...WALE started picking up the audio feed from Cox Cable's "Rhode Island News Channel" (which ITSELF is nothing but a repeating loop of the most recent ABC-6 local newscast)......and they seem to be running it in the overnight hours as fill, as well as in early evening .....and even in the early morning hours before Steve Bianchi (minus the pleasant young girl)...from 7am to 9am.

You ask if they're having an identity crisis? In my opinion, the answer has to be "YES". In the 6 weeks that I've been sampling bits and pieces of the programming, I get no sense whatsoever of any real cohesive format!!! It's as though the place were being programmed like a college radio station, with "Block Programming"......a copule of hours of this......3 hours of that......4 hours of something else......

The other thing I've noticed in my sampling of the station (and THIS one doesn't bode well)......I have not heard so much as ONE NEW SPONSOR since this "format"'s launch in mid-July......NOT EVEN ONE.

Also, over the past several days, some of the station's voices have been missing, like Bina, the pleasant young girl who was working (or is that volunteering?) split shifts there in AM drive AND PM drive. Also, "Jo-Jo Gator" and "Diane" have been missing from the "Mid-Day Madness" program.

As for what is really going on over there......Your guess is as good as mine ::)

Is it just me or is that girl topless in her photo on the WALE website?

I see about 4 girls on that website that I wouldn't mind seeing naked. Whoever is doing the hiring over there sure likes eye candy.

Here's an interesting little tidbit:

On today's "Midday Madness" program, "Jo-Jo" and "Diane" were dropping coy little hints about a soon-coming "Big Move" at the station, and how, by Monday, they should be broadcasting out of "new" studios...but did not mention an address or location.

Hmmmmmm......

I wonder if this means that WALE is moving downtown to 227 Weybossett Street, to share studio space with co-owned 1320 WARL?

If this turns out to be the case, then I'm surprised these guys didn't do it long ago as a way to consolidate, and save $$$$$$.

P.S. As of 4pm this afternoon...Big John Bina missing in action yet again......

So John, you're a go-getter. Why don't you approach the station with an idea for a no-holds-barred talk show, get on the air, & sell your own spots?

I heard that too. I was thinking they would make the move to FM WSNE being that there are shakings going on over there and that show has potential from what I heard. The adult banter may be too much for FM but their numbers for the station are high so they have listeners. I wonder what happened to the Bina and I am surprised Bianchi is still hanging in there. The WARL idea is a good one....you should clue them in as they seem to be clueless.

Did you hear Jenny Boom Boom yesterday? She is up on their sight now too. It is starting to look like a Brothel! They should get advertisers with all of that eye candy. :D

Nothing wrong with that. But can they make as much money as a brothel? That will be key!

I just found a different web page for the station. Not even sure how I got to this. But this one lists past guests with photos too. Start at the bottom of the page if you want to see pics pf the Porn star. I don't know if anyone is listening to the station yet, but they sure are doing whatever it takes to get people interested. Personally I'm all for it.

What a great idea... BUY a show... on a station with no signal... and try to sell it. Francis Batagglia did that years ago successfully until the advertisers found out no one could hear their ads. With a skeleton crew and a few live shows they replayed show tapes until they were muddy.

Thanks. Flattery will get you everywhere....LOL. Unfortunately, my hunch about WALE moving downtown to share digs with WARL was not right. That would have actually made some sense, paying on only ONE lease for studio space instead of two.

Anyway...the "reveal"...such as it was...consisted of "Jo-Jo" blathering on about some sort of home-brew studio he has in the sticks somewhere that he'd like to pipe-in his broadcasts from on occasion.

Oh...and speaking of "Jo-Jo"......How nice of him to acknowledge us radio geeks and nerds here on this board......LOL......LOL......LOL.

I'm sure this board has given his station more press than they're likely to get anywhere else......LOL.

And if he doesn't like some of the stuff some of us here have posted?.....OH WELL......That's Life...LOL

Yes... as an old sage once said too many times... any publicity is better than no publicity! I wonder if Jo Jo has ever done radio before??
Or perhaps slamming us gets him more comments...

I don't think the 990 studio would move to Dorrance street. The reason, Peter Arpin owns 1320 and owns a taste of 990. I don't think the relationship between him and Craig Rapoza the guy who owns the majority of 990 is stable at best. Speaking of 1320, The last time I dialed them in they "userped" programming from NPR. The other day they were carring programming from CBC. I was thrilled to hear what those clowns in Parliament were doing! But seriously it was enough to put a hyperactive 2 year old to sleep. They should donate both frequencies to some not for profit group. And speaking of not for profit, that is pretty much what WALE is. Tuning in there you can hear the same 3 "dollar a hollar" spots. Speaking of Bina, I don't think you'll be hearing him anymore. My guess is someone must have misplaced their checkbook on payday. BTW does WLNE have any idea their programming is being simulcast on 990. You would think they would promote it like the old days of 87.7?!?! Oh well, like everything else on 990 of late, listen today cause it may not be here tomorrow.

You're right. For the longest time, 1320 WARL was (still are?) running bootleg copies of the NPR program "Car Talk", and using it as fill.

Thanks for refreshing my memory on the location of the 1320 digs. It IS Dorrance St., not Weybossett....my bad.

Also, if you look through the posted FCC online records, you'll find that Peter Arpin owns 79 percent of WALE, with Craig Rapoza owning, if I remember...10 percent. To me anyway, 79 percent is more than "just a taste".......although it's highly likely that Rapoza runs things over there on a day-to-day basis.

If Big John Bina really is gone, then that's too bad. I was really starting to dig those dusty moldy oldies.

Funny you should mention WALE carrying the audio feed from Cox Cable's Rhode Island News Channel. You hear a whole lot more spots just on those repeated ABC-6 newscasts than you ever hear on 990's regular "programming"...LOL

The wacky wonderful world of broadcasting......you just gotta love it ! ! !
