WALE 990

Dighton Rockhead said:
Anyway.... at about 11:15 tonight....with lots of cross-talk from Rochester NY's Christian station on 990......Amy Grant begins singing the Born-Again song "El-Shaddai". WALE immediately counters with the theme from the movie "The Exorcist"......LOL......LOL.

Folks...this stuff is just too crazy to make up...and PRICELESS!!

Ah, nothing like a little "Tubular Bells" to cause some interference with the Word...

Why don't they run nothing but spooky Halloween sound effects all month long. They might actually get some numbers. Next month they can run nothing but gobbles then drop some live turkeys from a helicopter over North Main Street. December they can play nothing but Christmas music. By January we'll probably hear that Big Ange, Arlene Violet, & Glenn Laxton have agreed to work there so they'll be out of the woods.

They should just open the door like a retail store and let anyone walk in off the street who wants to play Radio. Charge them $50 an hour to get on the air and talk about whatever they want. Have some intern run the board for free.

Sounds like the Battaglia operation, except at least you are about 4k cheaper with your rates!

The other day WALE gave me a great laugh when I tuned in and heard "If I Only Had A Brain" playing!

The Spanish communities actually support the radio shows in any market... the businesses pay for ads and I bet the Spanish programs are supporting the whole station and keeping the lights on for the one lonely intern whose car is parked in the lot.

Good point. Look at how 1110 WPMZ has survived...and even thrived for all these years in spite of being a DAYTIMER...with no chance of ever getting any night power.

Now...if only they would actually remember to turn OFF the transmitter after sign-off...LOL.

I love the sound effects idea. The Rapoza guy can do them himself when everyone starts to clamp down for the money he owes them and I hear he owes ALL of them. The turkey sounds should be natural!

MEMO

TO: Peter Arpin, Craig Rapoza, Dr. Manolo Pazos, and anyone else in the ownership of 990 WALE / 1320 WARL:

Do yourselves and the listeners (if any) a favor. Get a crowbar and pry open those tight checkbooks and invest in some automation equipment for these sad-sack stations.

In this day and age of modern studio electronics, there is NO EXCUSE for the kind of unprofessional sloppy sound these stations exhibit on a constant basis.

I tuned in yesterday. I can't even explain what I was hearing. There is no explanation. Just random music with no obvious format from what I could tell. Definitely nothing to keep me locked in. As far as I'm concerned WALE can be used as a way to make sure your speakers are working. That's about all.

They should change their name to "HOLIDAY 990". Music to fit any season. At least they would finally have a format that someone may listen to. They should be playing all Halloween music right now. Then obviously Christmas music after that. No idea what they'll do for the rest of the year. I'm guessing that it will be hard to build a playlist around George Washington's Birthday. Not a lot of Easter songs either. Oh well... they could make it work if they tried hard enough.

The problem with you guys tuning this station in and acting astonished at what you hear is that it doesn't even qualify to be a trainwreck. A trainwreck is a station with some thought behind the programming that turns out to be misguided or clueless thought, but thought nonetheless. It's a programming disaster but if nothing else it's programmed. WALE is not. It's on shuffle with no rhyme or reason. There's no sense picking it apart any more than someone's personal iPod with everything from spanish music to movie themes.

I would agree with you if WALE wasn't registered with the FCC and if they didn't broadcast from a Radio Tower.

Fix the processing so its not overmodulating and add some liners and a TOH legal ID - AM 990 WALE Greenville-Providence and basically it's the same thing as Multi-Cultural Broadcasting's WHWH 1350 in Princeton, NJ. WHWH is Radio T.E.D. which stands for Timeless Entertainment Device. It plays music of varying formats all day long commercial free with no DJs. Just VO's by a guy that works at a radio station in Marion, Illinois. "Radio T.E.D. - You Never Know What we'll play next." And they make a little bit of money by selling airtime for some High School Sports.

Marc:

If "MissAM" is correct in the belief that the weekend Spanish programming is footing the bill to keep 990 on life support...THEN your idea of the "Radio T.E.D" format makes a whole lot of sense.

It sounds like what you've described is basically a low-rent version of the "Mike" format.....or whatever guy's name you want to use....("Wally-AM", anyone?).

Wow, and who would that be?

Are they still running programming from WLNE?

Yes......But it never seems to air on a consistent basis. It just pops up at various times on various days...and for varying lengths of time. In short...they got this one wrong too!

Right now...the only things that seem to be airing consistently on 990 are the weekend Spanish programming, and the Monday night / Tuesday morning program "The Conspiracy Hour"...featuring some guys who fancy themselves as the next Alex Jones...LOL... ;D.
