WALE STUDIOS

My trip down North Main st the other day I noticed the WALE signs that were hanging in windows are completely gone.So I guess the offices are now empty. The FCC still has them as licensed.Do they even know they are dark fro about a year now?

These days....I'm not sure the FCC knows or cares about much of anything except BROADBAND.

Human nature suggests that Peter Arpin will do whatever it takes to keep his claws on the WALE license. The 990 facility as it is may not amount to much....but an FCC radio station license is still a valuable commodity.

Everybody has a price. Anybody who says they don't is either stupid or lying.

Yep, except in very rare circumstances, I'd agree 100% with that.

However, from what I know of the WALE saga, there simply no price high enough to ensure a sale that wouldn't also be massively overpaying for that signal...which is, ehem, "lacking" to say the least.

It would take a hell of a lot of money to get the transmitter site back up and into licensed values again. Sampling lines and loops are shot, and I bet the ground system is too. Steve Conti's photos of the inside of the transmitter building are showing a Nautel AMPFET 50 looking like the utter hell has been beaten out of it. Mowry Lowe must be spinning in his grave with his baby in this shape.Would be an interesting challenge given the money and programming.

Dave:

I'm certain I remember reading somewhere online that in 1959 or 1960 when the Burrilville transmitter site was being prepared for the future WLKW-990, that the RCA towers that were installed were of the lowest quality and least expensive available.

If that's true, then it must be something of a minor miracle that any of those towers remain standing.

In any event....from the way you describe things....any potential owner is pretty much looking at starting from scratch.

1959.

Tube stock.

Not necessarily a bad move at the time given that the site is well inland, away from salt air. With good maintenance I've seen tube-stock towers last over fifty years. But much over 50. Arithmetic, anyone????
