"Walk" Debuts at Noon Tomorrow...We Think

Some thoughts:

98.9 ends its simulcast with "Rock 100.5" tomorrow mid-day at noon.
The general thinking is that it will turn to the branding "Walk."
We really don't know what format it will play; it could be AAA, Classic Hits, etc.
"Walk" is a huge Alternative song sung by Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters.

I hope I'm wrong but I've heard the format will be Christian Country. Why merge 2 rock stations, shout about it being "one big bad a** rock station" to immediately launch a AAA station with many of the same artists? Cumulus is cornering the market on Rock radio in Atlanta with one frequency, 100.5. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong but you're going to have to get your Dave FM fix from another b'casting company. Streaming anyone?

989 Nash-FM

Just found 2 facebook pages that went live on January 29th named "Nash 989" and "989 Nash FM." I also noticed 989thewalk.com has a lot of info pertaining to country artists. Could this be another country station?

The Facebook page has gone love with a logo in addition to a cover photo featuring country artists like Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood.

Kris, would love a copy of the flip. I've got some cool stuff recorded as well if you'd like in trade - Dave FM's last day, Boortz's last show and some other stuff from the past.

Thanks for rolling tape/packets/digital.. :)

I can't even pick up 98.9 at my house in south Marietta.

I'm in Woodstock and seem to be picking up 98.9 OK, but the signal isn't necessarily free of fuzz. The recording came out OK.

I'd be willing to trade :) I was recording Mara Davis' last Radio Free Lunch on 92.9 Dave FM but a glitch caused me to lose the recording. That really bugged me as I wanted to archive that.

Whomever has a good recording of the change, please send it to formatchange.com. They have a lot of the Atlanta format changes.

As to this flip, it is definitely a hole and given that Cumulus owns 101.5, it is an easy sell. Also, people who really like this music will put up with the not-so-good signal.

Entercom tried this format in Greenville, SC for several years in the mid-2000s. It was an epic failure.

Well, this is going on a translator, so there is not a huge risk. It will be easy to sell as Cumulus already has a sales staff targeting customers who will be interested in this format.

My Cumulus sales sources tell me this is being sold to advertisers to go along with the Females 25-54 demographic. So Q100, Kicks and The Walk may very well be sold all together. Still no close on how 99x plays into this, if it does at all.

I just notified formatchange.com that I recorded the flip and would be more than glad to donate it to them. I'm waiting to hear back from them. :)

I listened to it for a bit, and the music mix would definitely qualify as Contemporary Christian, with the following twists:

1) A larger proportion of secular artists than your average CCM station.
2) A LOT of country, but not exclusively country.
3) Some hot AC and mainstream rock.

It seems like this station is geared towards people who like the idea of The Fish, but don't like the narrow playlist and the reliance on AC CCM.

Salem's 104.7 is the one most threatened by this station, as it offers an alternative to The Fish's tight AC playlist.

WFSH is about the only big FM without an HD-2. I'm surprised that Salem hasn't fired one or more up to either broadcast their AlternaFISH format (see www.alternafishradio.com , Christian active rock and hip-hop) or simul some of their AMs.

This move might push Salem to put their evening AlternaFISH show (see http://www.955thefish.com/) on in the evenings when their "adult" listenership drops off.
