WALK Knocked off the Air Today?

In an online Newsday article reporting on this morning's storm the following was written, "Reports were WALK radio -- 97.5 FM -- was even knocked off the air."

First of all, what kind of reporting says "It was reported". Isn't Newsday supposed to be doing the reporting. So who reported it. If its worth printing is it not worth verifying? I realize its not a major issue, since we are only talking about a radio station being off the air, but it read rather funny to me.

Anyway, can anyone confirm that WALK was in-fact off the air and for how long. Also, did HD2 go down as well?

So Newsday (even moreso, its online version) rushed an unconfirmed, odd read? I wonder why this comes as a surprise. IMHO, it goes beyond just Newsday. I find that a trend over the last 10-15 years has diminished news in general: the need to be first trumps the responsibility to be fair and accurate (it's all about raising more ad dollars by increasing ratings, even at the expense of the truth).

Unscientifically, they were off the air when I got drenched at ShopRite around 9:30 this morning. But IIRC, I heard them back on when I turned the radio back on sometime around 11:00. Considering their waterside location, they should be glad if nothing floated away. Since I don't remember it raining so hard so quickly anytime recently, I really don't find this to be a big deal. I have no HD radio, so I couldn't tell you about their HD2.

I enjoyed hearing Scott Miller fill in this morning, though.

You raise an interesting question. This is the station who urges us to be prepared for a major hurricane. If there is a 20 foot storm surge where will they be broadcasting from? Bald Hill?
