Walk the Plank?

The following was posted on NetNews today...

"Remember a few weeks back when ALL ACCESS mentioned that a NEW YORK CITY PD was about to "walk the plank?" Well, that rumor is back in a big way. And, is a spin of the format wheel likely as well? Hmmmmmm!"

This looks like a reference to Scott Shannon. Pirate ships have planks.
Scott created Pirate Radio in LA. I may be reading WAY between
the lines, but PLJ has been discussed as needing a format flip.
Does anyone have any credible information?

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I think that's a stretch man, I think they're just trying to find clever ways of saying someone's getting the axe, I dont think allaccess was making a "Pirate radio" reference although I see where you were going with that. I betcha someone will be dancing out the door more than walking any plank.

PLJ is making a ton of money despite languishing ratings... and a ton of that comes from morning drive. My guess is that Shannon is safe, and the reference is to another PD.

Maybe the format change action isn't going to happen on 95.5 or 102.7.

Could Clear Channel flip WAXQ-104.3 to talk, using mostly syndicated programming from sister company Premiere Networks??

WAXQ's overall (12-plus) audience has declined over the last year, like that of many rock stations around the country.

Clear Channel has already flipped former music stations in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis/St. Paul to talk, and took away several Premiere-syndicated shows (most notably Rush Limbaugh) that had been on other stations in those markets. With Baltimore's WBAL-1090 dropping Rush around June 1st, I wouldn't be surprised if CC flips one of it's Baltimore FM stations to talk, using Rush as the foundation of a new FM talk format. Although this Premiere press release announces that Rush will be heard after June 1 in Baltimore on a station to be named, could Premiere's announcement be not just of a new Baltimore affiliate for Rush, but of a new CC-owned FM talker??

IIRC, Rush and "Coast To Coast" are the only Premiere weekday shows currently on in New York (both on WABC-770). I do know WABC carries Matt Drudge's Sunday-night show (syndicated by Premiere), but I don't know if any other Premiere weekend shows are heard in New York.

Think about it: The chance to get Rush "in-house" (on a CC-owned station), the chance to get several other Premiere shows on the air in the number-one market, and the chance to expand CC's reach into talk radio on FM to include New York. These could be reasons why CC may want to flip WAXQ to talk.

And one more thing: New York hasn't really been a strong rock market since the glory days of WNEW-102.7 as an album rocker.

I read that article, and if I can remember correctly, they were talking about the PD of Free FM.

They were talking about all the drama with DLR as well.

Why would the Program Director of Free-FM be fired, when it's obviously that the talent is making life hell over there?

Sacrificial lamb? It's not like said PD chose to roll out someone with no radio experience as the AM Morning Man in 10+ major markets.

It's understandable that NYC hasn't had a strong rock station in a while, but then why does it need to lose its last one? Personally I'd think Clear Channel would be a bit smarter than creating a second and equally unnecessary FM talk in NYC. Minneapolis and Pittsburgh are two markets where CBS doesn't run FreeFM, so maybe there was a void there (and that's a stretch at best)...I don't listen to Q104.3 a ton, but it still has a preset on my radio...and to continually take away anything rock related isn't smart int he long run (although who knows, CBS might want it to help Jack's ratings)...

Talk is an expensive format.... and with Free-FM doing it currently, and the previous train wreck that was WNEW-FM, my guess is that CC would be ill-advised to flip WAXQ to talk. More likely a scenario might be CC making a play for WABC once the "merger" closes and/or WOR.

Clear Channel can run an FM talker in New York with 24/7 syndicated programming.

The company has a regionally-syndicated morning talk show (Quinn and Rose's "The War Room", based in Pittsburgh) which might eventually go national, since the show's homepage refers to itself as "America's Morning Show".

And CC-owned Premiere has a number of shows that can fill-out the rest of the broadcast day, several of which aren't currently on in New York.

Besides, CC moving Rush Limbaugh off of WABC-770 onto a new FM talker could immediately make that station a "force to be recknowed with" since it's my understanding that Rush gets some of his highest shares anywhere on WABC.

Pointless, pointless pointless. If you're not local in NY of all places where many of the syndicated programming that goes to OTHER PARTS of the country comes from, why would you even think about an all syndicated station in New York particularly when there is already an FM talker on air and there is no rock station and while Q104 may be classic rock,.............skip it, you're not making any sense, you just love to post for the sake of posting things that would never happen just because you need to have something to say.....ERGO logic is wasted on you.

I agree... that is one of the silliest posts I've seen in a while.

I would think the station in question is possibly WNEW - which has been sliding in recent months.

Would they bring back a rock format to compete with WAXQ? They SHOULD bring Oldies. Or maybe create form of Classic Hits/Oldies hybrid that could be 70's based - and fit between WLTW and WAXQ...

An FM is viable for music. An AM is not. So, why kill a profitable AM usage via syndication when every CC FM in NY is doing well? Clear has no problems that need fixing. The get their Premiere revenue via WABC, and have a set of very successful FMs. It would be a double whammy to revenue to yank Rush and kill an FM.

If anyone can't do FM music _or_ talk, it appears to be CBS.

This Joeseph Gallant lives to hear himself talk. He posts things just to have something to post no matter how improbable or obvious his ideas are. He just has to have something to say. Very annoying.
