Walking Naked down route 13?

Can't anyone of us in radio come up with new ideas? I had hopes that the new guy in Ithaca was going to be different, not! Z955.5 is promoting their morning guy is going to walk "naked" down route 13 tomorrow morning at 7:30! (why? I don't know...just to get a rise out of the audience) Then we all gather round for the specticle and along comes some dude from a radio station walking a dog on a leash and the dogs name is "Naked" come on...Creativity is lost!!! I suppose the bit is new to Ithaca? Is that the nucleus of your programming stint in Ithaca bro, used lame ideas...get used to Ithaca! Those are go no where ideas...been there done that, when it was original!

Small market promotion. Didn't cost a cent. Some listeners may have noticed, tuned in and laughed. At least one board poster mentioned it. It's Ithaca and Finger Lakes Radio, not NYC and Z100. Hey, at least they didn't do a "we're gonna change the format" promotion.

And who does the radio industry have to blame for that? Itself. For underpaying small market jocks for years, and then replacing them with syndication, voicetracking or personalityless automation. We all knew it was coming several years ago when voicetracking started catching on at a large scale.

Overnights and weekends are a great place for newer talent to develop their skills before they get promoted into a prime airshift. But now that most stations have replaced those shifts with automation, newbies are thrown right into prime shifts like mornings or afternoons. And when they can't run a tight board, or they babble about nothing, or they pull lame stunts like this, listeners turn away.

I am not even in the business of radio, and I can tell you that you are absolutely right; however, I will add that when those who can't run a tight board and babble about nothing and pull lame stunts, not only do listeners turn away, but station management does nothing about it and couldn't care less. It's cheap enough help. Perhaps putting them on commission for awhile might help clean it up.

I was in the area when the stunt was taking place. It drew a lot of attention from motorists, as well as local authorities. I live in Ithaca and we've had to suffer with lame radio stations for years. Finally a radio station that isn't mostly voice-tracked and is out on the streets having fun with their listeners and the community. Give some credit where it's due.
As far as Owners comment about the talent pool in this area not being that great...you're entitled to your opinion, as misguided as it might be. There are numerous talented air personalities in Central New York, including the guys on Z95.5 who did Monday morning's stunt.

"Owner" thinks he's part of the talent pool. Check out his web radio station. That'll tell you all you need to know.

Hey, they know what they know because that's all they have learned....they could be worse! There's a morning show on the classic rocker in the much bigger market of Binghamton that is so so bad. I wonder if Citadel even knows or cares! Citadel's upper management in that region...they aren't the sharpest tools in the shed!

Citadel's Regional VP for Binghamton, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Erie PA hasn't exactly outperformed the market.

Sorry Youngsters, but you're patting yourselves on the back. The talent pool in the area aint' what it used to be. Bill Keeler is a good example of this. The last time I listened was the last time, which was 10 minutes, 10 years ago, listening to a conversation about "Periods". Compare that guy to Joe Gallagher? The talent pool isnt too good. The good ones are on the air. I may not know everything but this I do know.
Bob Ross makes a good point about the automation being part of the problem. He probably also knows that holds true for many industries. My best defense for radio is that it's "Blue Collar" nature should dictate the Idea that "Work" and "Radio" are separate things. People are trying to escape pressures of everyday by tuning in. The airstaff should promote to the GM's and Sales people, to not sound like stiffs. It's ART, not business on the programming side. You can comply and be very funny on the air, just have to be a good artist.

I'm sorry, but spending lots of money on air talent, or investing in talent development, doesn't prevent silly promotional ideas from happening. It also doesn't mean that some people won't like what the air talent is doing. Everyone wants to be a critic. It's fun to make fun of someone whose supposed to know better. There are entire web pages built around that kind of thing.

Every year, I listen to politicians who tell me that we need to spend more money on education. They say that more money translates to a better education. Better education means smarter students who will in turn, bring in more money for the community. And yet, as education budgets have increased geometrically, we've watched test scores go down. How could that be?

High priced talent do stupid things. Ask Imus.

Yeah, and high-priced executives continue hire him AFTER he's done stupid things, and pay him a lot of money. It's almost like reinforcing the idea that "stupid" = "money".

I loved Imus in the '70s and '80s. Now? Ugh. It's hard for me to believe that the millions that they're paying him would be better spent saving dozens of jobs elsewhere.

I know, I know. "Corporate knows best". Uh-huh. What's Citadel's stock price today? 4 cents? A nickel?

Like the human inability to NOT look at a car crash in progress - I noticed the subject line "walking naked down Route 13" in conjunction with a last comment posted by The Big A.

Involuntarily my finger left-clicked the mouse. First time I've ever visited here. Greetings, Syra-Uticans.

Good to see that The Big A never disappoints - wherever he posts.

Best wishes to all.

Im kind of answering everybody here at once. It seems as if the overall thought is that we are spending a lot of money on talent that make big mistakes. People are human and can make mistakes, consistantly. Its the type of person that doesnt make mistakes that are too big to handle and can still make it sound interesting. Pay-per-view?
