I'll agree with you that WVOR today is a shell of its former self, but I wouldn't be so quick to lay the blame on Clear Channel. Remember that CC didn't buy from Lincoln Group - it bought from Jacor, which bought from Lincoln Group in 1997. And remember that the last couple of years of WVOR under Lincoln Group weren't much to write home about.

I'd place the start of WVOR's downhill slide about when Tony and Dee went over to WRMM, which was still in the Lincoln Group days. After that, WVOR had a few spectacularly unsuccessful years as "Variety 100.5," still under Lincoln, which I think got distracted when it swallowed WPXY. They tried to edge WVOR older to avoid cannibalizing the PXY audience.

The WVOR that Jacor bought was already hurting pretty badly, as I recall it. Tony and Dee were gone, the service elements were gone, and the AC audience had walked up the dial to WRMM.

Which is not to say that the early "Mix 100.5," with its trainwreck segues that in retrospect sounded a lot like "Jack" before there was "Jack," was the answer, either. Nor is today's hot AC "Mix," which I guess is supposed to be part of a "wall of women" strategy that stretches across the demos from Kiss to Sunny. <P ID="signature">______________
