WALR proves something....

WALR has really improved, the music is much better so that also helps the ratings. I don't know if anyone will ever be able to topple V-103 though?

...you don't need a GREAT signal to get great ratings. The right format with the right publicity and the right personalities can give you big ratings.

Here's their signal:

Check their ratings:

It will be interesting to see if they can overtake V103 when they move closer to Atlanta.

It would be difficult to overtake V-103 especially when Kiss 104.1 is a R&B station and V is a full-service urban.

remember that Kiss has direct competition from Magic

Majic has been winning the 25-54 numbers for a while now, even when Kiss has won 6+. Kiss has an older audience. I wonder if the loss of Michael Baisden hurt Majic in overall numbers last month.

I wish Majic would put SiMan in afternoon drive and get rid of Skip Murphy's show. I still haven't forgot what I heard months ago about Frank Ski and Majic.

Roddy- the answer to your Q would be yes. Kiss did edge out Magic 25-54 in APR due in part to PMD weakening with the loss of MB, they held rank but share was off 22% Will be interesting to see this moving forward with both Urban AC's now with talent changes in PMD

True. When you take into account that Kiss and Magic's format are more similar to each other than they they are to V-103, that format is collectively drawing more listeners than V-103's more urban format. I've said it many times and will say it again, that because of the fact that V-103's signal is centrally located, vs being in Newnan as Kiss is, they get quite a few default listeners, especially in the north metro because Kiss's signal doesn't penetrate buildings as well once you get north of say, Buckhead. If Kiss was located at the Richland antenna farm with their 1200' height that they presently have, I feel that at the least, they tie V-103, if not exceed it in ratings.

In the case of Magic, their loss of Michael Baisden outweighs their improved signal. Skip Murphy just isn't getting the job done.

V-103 does have a monster signal, and that certainly doesn't hurt. But I think a lot more than just signal gives them the success they have.

I listen to all 6 of the FM Urban stations here, but V's signal is a beast!!! I must admit KISS is sounding more upbeat than ever and they even changed the positioner to "Atlanta's Best R&B" while MAJIC's is "Atlanta's Best Mix of R&B". These 2 stations are at war, but if MAJIC doesn't get rid of Skip I can see them dropping.

Kiss's signal actually has a slightly larger footprint than V-103's. While they are both at 100K ERP, Kiss is at 1,217 feet, while V-103 is at 1,017. V-103 obviously has the advantage of being 25-30 miles closer to the center of the metro.

The fact that V-103 is a full-service urban contemporary format that programs hip-hop, R&B, urban throwbacks, gospel, and even occasionally crossover hits is why it has a stronger advantage than Kiss 104.1 overall. Being an urban adult contemporary (Urban AC), which Kiss and Majic area, has its limitations and one of them is audience appeal overall. Atlanta is also a relatively "young professional" urban market where the average urban music listeners are within the 25-34 versus most other large Southern cities where their target audience for urban formats are either younger (18-24) or older (35+). This makes this market more susceptible to be into a broader range of urban music of contemporary hip-hop and R&B along with throwbacks within the format.

When 96 Rock flipped to Project in 2006, V-103 became the oldest moniker (1977) on the commercial FM dial. When WKLS changed their calls to WWPW, WVEE (1977-1978, WPLO-FM prior to that) moved into third place as the oldest calls (behind WSB-FM [1940s?]and WZGC [early 70s after WGKA-FM?]) on the commercial FM dial. That's a lot of heritage.
