WAMO 860 Goes Urban Talk

Confirmed that Majic 860 is done--as the selling of 107.1 ended the simulcast. WAMO will pick up the Radio One urban talk network as well as some additional urban talk shows.

I figured that's what would happen, but was kept at bay by the Sheridan vs. Radio One relationship.

But, as I now know, the Great Morganza is never wrong. (Or something like that...:))

I don't understand why

I am a 1979-80 former WAMO employee. In that era, wamo was poised to be one of the leading stations. disco you know! Today however Bev Smith has a great show! But there are not ten shows as good as her show. wamo was in a position to do really well with 860 as a music station. But the folks in programming were too afraid of the so called old school music. You know all of those people you see now, who liked more than pat boone They had to keep sliding in music that was current or so 1990's. No "oldies station" plays the Pgh R & B oldies.
Wamo could have been the WJAS of urban music.. a lot of people like this. The midday announcer was super "Maybe satellite so good." Tom Joyner has a show that is funny and cooler than david lee. But who gave it a chance. Who gave it a jingle package?
Where is it written that an african american owner can only have formats that are african american. As WHOD and after 1960 WAMO and then a very smart Jewish man had a black format on the air. As WHOD in addition to Mary DEE and Porky.. they had country and ethnic "Hungarian Shows on the air. Why didn't WAMO put a Westmoreland county format on 107.1 and make money? And use that money to keep that company hot. I've worked at WAMO as I said in the past the people were fair to work for , nice and smart. Why go this direction with am 860? about 8 or 10 years ago 1510 was giving WAMO a run for their money.. with the right PGH music.

Which leads us to another question: Will they continue with AURN?

Why not, it's part of the ownership! This may be a good move since AURN and Radio One do deal together nowadays, but how will this area support another talk station especially this format?

It's a niche format, and one which may very well be successful. Pittsburgh does have a smaller black population than other similar-sized cities, but the population it does have tends to be more involved, vocal, and mobilized (historically, go back to the Wylie Avenue days and the Lower Hill protests of the late 50s/early 60s).

Plus, with the weight of the WAMO name and Sheridan's good-will already existent in the community, the factors for success all seem to be met.

Will it out-perform KDKA or WPGB? No. Outperform WAMO-FM? No. But make a return on the investment, and garner its chosen target demo? You bet.

If I'm wrong, we'll see in a year.
