WAMR-AM Drops Sports for FM Simulcast?

Just read that 1320 WAMR is dropping sports to simulcast Lite 92.1. Dropping sports for another format I understand... but to simulcast one of the FMs? That's a waste. What I'm wondering... is if this is just temporary till WLSS drops the WGUL simulcast for talk leaving the market ripe for another oldies/music of your life station on the AM side of the dial.

Sounds like temporary stunting to me. Although it's nice to see those two stations married again. They were a combo down there on Auburn Road at one time. I wonder if 1320 got their CP to move to Eastern Manatee County with 35,000 watts yet? They dont put a good enuf signal north of Venice to be listenable unless you have a good radio like a superadio or Sony ICF2010.

WLSS is simulcasting WGUL? When did this start happening? Last time I was in the market was about 4 or 5 months ago and WLSS was still talk.

WAMR was costing a lot of money to run for what their return was. Good luck to Scott and Dan, both great guys. At this point, I would agree that a flip back to "adult standards" for WAMR would be great choice especially in a town like Sarasota and that WGUL will be vacating the format soon.

Agreed. It's no wonder why Clear Channel is "aka" Cheap Channel.
Edited by radionut987 on 07/23/05 01:36 AM.

Who thought this is a good idea? Come on, next 1450 will simulcast The Buzz. Its just like Clearchannel to screw up a good thing. Thou I don't agree with what the Dork PD has done with the station I still like some of the programming they have. If that station is losing so much money, it's time to get a new PD. The one thing I liked about this area is I have a choice in sports talk radio. When Dumig drives me insain I can change the station. By the way, thats called freedom to make a decision, I know that some don't believe in that but I do. If I don't like something on the radio I change the station. It's a sad day in Sarasota. Hay you morons over their at CC. CHANGE THE PD.

It had nothing to do with the PD. In fact, you couldn't ask for a better sports programmer. The problem was, at least in my opinion, corporate changing the programming (for example using more Fox than ESPN) and the fact that WDAE has a better signal in Sarasota and Manatee than WAMR. It's not easy having 2 sports stations in the Sarasota market.

You are correct about Fox vs ESPN. Fox Sports was already bad but when they lost Bruno, that was the final straw. I also think moving Scott & Jake to mornings didn't help. I thought they were moving the signal to east of 75 off of fruitville? that would help. Also with Bruno on SNR from 9-1, They could have him on again. He's a popular guy in Tampa and moving the signal north could reach Tampa. I know I could hear WAMR on the bridge going into ST Pete. I know its not the PD's fault. He did keep some ESPN programming and some of the local sports coverage such as High School and a hope they would carry some of the Hockey is very good. It's just a shame we have to loss a good sports station. I hope they know what they are doing.

When is this supposed to happen? They were still sports this weekend

AM 1320 The Dove

WAMR is calling themselves "AM 1320 The Dove" as of this morning. Sounds like 92.1 when they came on the air in '99- B/EZ

Re: Lite versus Dove

92.1 The Lite FM is now programmed by Annie Summers (sp?), formally of "107.3 The Bay" in Tampa. Dave Harrel moves to the former WAMR to PD "The Dove". My only question is can a MOYL format in Sarasota/Venice generate better revenue than the sports format. Or maybe a better question is, it is less expensive to run.

I thought Annie did a good job on the original version of 107.3 The Bay, I know she came from successful WMMO in Orlando. The music at first was so much better than what the station ended up playing at the end. They sounded more like the original 102.5 The Point, but you could hear the change when Cox changed 94.9 from Warm to "the NEW" Magic. That was the beginning of the end for 107.3 The Bay.
