WAMS back when...

Back in the early 60's, a jock named Dave Eldridge was at WAMS. Anyone have any idea what became of him... or if he's still on this side of the grass??

Phil...

Have you stoked some memories! I remember Dave...very velvety voice...with Lee Davis (later Bill Quay in the afternoon...lost a hand and was an incredible study in how to run a 60s radio show manually with one hand!), Dean Tyler, Roger Holmes, Willie Gaylord and later Tom Crane in the morning. My mom won a $2 cash prize from them in about 1962...we lived in South Jersey...went with her to pick up the prize, Dave in the lobby...gave me a tour and the bug bit. I know that Dean is now retired and living along the Jersey shore, and Roger wen to work for the city of Wilmington...but the others, no idea.

I believe it is the same Roger Holmes, he's on WVUD 91.3 Uof Del, Sunday evenings, I believe around 8pm (you can find the exact time at WVUD.org ). His show is called In the Mist.

Before Dave was at WAMS, he was at WHYE in Roanoke. That's the station I'd love to quiz him about!!
WAMS was pretty decent in its day...

In 1987 when I was hired to convert WAMS from Country To Oldies, I tracked down a lot of these guys and recorded on air recollections of WAMS' glory days, including Dave Eldridge. Dave had a very long run as station manager at Rollins' WRAP-AM 850 in Norfolk; at that time Bill Quay was at WIOV-FM in Ephreta, Dean Tyler who's retired now was PD of WPEN, and Bob Riech & Seymore Duck, Bob was managing an FM in Miami; most of the rest were from WAMS' Mighty Quinn era, in which I played a part.

You could probably track down Dave in the Tidewater area.

Re: WAMS back when...WAMS Now!

What a wonderful station. My compliments to the folks programming WAMS this New Years Day and into the early morning. I've been listening all day and the music mix is just really terrific! I live on the west coast in California and there is no station on the air in the entire state that sounds as good as WAMS 1260! Keep up the good work! RadioStarOne.

July 4th 1987 The last country song WAMS played "All My Ex's Live In Texas" then the sound of fireworks start. About the same time, a thunderstorm startrs up and knocks the station off the air! That alone should have told them something!

Yeah...you might say we were a little spooked by that... ;D

actually, Roger announced his retirement from WVUD in March. Photos are online at www.wvud.org

Brian Lee (another WAMS jock) has picked up Roger's portion of the Sunday programming with some help from fill in hosts.
