WAMS is on the bird now

This evening I noticed when I tuned in to WAMS that they are now on the bird airing a satellite oldies format. It may have been the ABC radio Oldies feed as WAMS did air a non-sponsored ABC newscast on the hour. The oldies format is jocked, with national spots via the network and spot avails for the local spots.

The live jock that was on last week told listeners the morning show will start Monday, with Jay Fox (ABC) and then live 11a-2p, and in a few weeks WAMS DJ Dave bartley will be back on at 2p-6p. Also mentioned that Larry Edwards from the WAMS all request oldies show would be back.

If its Jay Fox, then its the same ABC service used by WNRK.

It seems odd that WAMS would go to the bird during AM drive and yet use live local jocks from 11am to 6pm (of course 3pm-6pm would hit PM drive). Either way it sounds like WAMS is making some progress. Even my wife, who's a confirmed FM listener, has been listening to WAMS this past week. She said that she's bored with WOGL's same ole same ole and WAMS has such a great variety.

ABC radio has a large draw with Jay Fox. On a local level most AM stations can not afford to pay for major talent for a morning show, so ABC is a good way to go. It is well produced and has plenty of on-air prizes.

Is the music better on the (bird) or when WAMS is local? I would bet the music on the (bird) is the same as all the FM oldies stations, big hits and no 50's.

The music, for my ear, is better when WAMS is local(they've got a fantastic music library and aren't afraid to play it), yet ABC plays a good mix with 50's and 60's, and some 70's music and not just the same ole which is far better than WOGL, in my opinion. So whether on the bird with ABC radio or local, WAMS has better music.

That's a good point.

Fox is a good talent and makes a good morning host. But as to "live-local" talent, I have heard no more than a minute of talking per hour in the pm drive. That could very well be v/t. You can still preview the up coming songs.

You 3 people who listen to this mickey mouse operation don't get it. It will never be an alternative to FM. The station is a joke! Get a life!

WAMS and the "mouse"

No you don't get it. Just because a station is a small operation doesn't make it "mickey mouse". If WAMS is able to find a niche in the Wilmington market and can meet that need where it can become a viable business so that the owner makes a profit then by my definition that is a successful radio station. As the Wilmington market isn't as large and as expensive as the Philly market, maybe a "mom and pop" station can make it here where as the odds are far less likely in Philly. If he fails, he can at least say he made an effort. It's his money and I don't get the impression the owner is a "blueblood" whose doing this for a hobby. So he's putting his own cash on the line. I hope his gamble pays off. Frankly, it's a pretty gutsy thing to do, win or lose.
