WAMZ's Construction Permit

Looks like Clear Channel wants to move WAMZ to the same tower farm as WLGX, WNRW, and WKRD. It also looks like there will be somewhat of a downgrade too. WAMZ will be dropping from 673ft to 554 thus reducing coverage somewhat and reducing a significant amount of coverage going south of Louisville. I know in the past people have said that WAMZ had problems covering certain sections of the downtown area. But I just don't see how an ERP of 100kw signal from 11.4 miles away could have trouble covering anything.

WLGX comes in decently here in Lexington, are they trying to pipe WAMZ in even better in this area? Also cover Frankfort even better. Just go ahead and move WQMF over there too.

Yeah, I was thinking might as well move WQMF over there too. However I was also thinking that moveing WAMZ's signal closer to Lexington would hurt WBUL a little too.

That construction permit has been out for a while now. I just hope it improves WAMZ's signal in Lexington. I like listening to them when I can pick them up. I also enjoy listening to 100.5, though I can only pick it up on the west and south sides of Lexington. Wondering if the signal from WAMZ will be even better than the WLGX signal is.

Actually this Constrution permit was issued 2/7/13....However I do remember another permit too. I think it expired. I wonder if that will actually build it out this time?

If WAMZ could come in better here in Lexington it STILL would beat 92.9. Yeah I love listening to 100.5. It's great! I also think moving WAMZ closer to Lexington would affect 98.1. 98.1 tried to move their tower site back in the early 2000's which might have helped.

Why would you want to listen to WAMZ when you are in Lexington? They only have 2 live local dayparts per day.

They had a CP about five years ago to move WAMZ to WHAS' tower but it was never pursued. It makes sense to move that direction so the heart of the population has the strongest signal.

The other CP goes back maybe 10+ years and would have put WAMZ on the WHAS tower...a little taller but a little farther out than the WKRD site IIRC. Must agree with the poster that stated that 100KW from Brooks Hill should be quite potent at 11 miles. They did move 100.5 from that same site to where it is now. Apparently that worked out favorably for them. All that said, the file number of the current CP indicates it sprang to life in some form on 4/19/2012 and was first signed on 3/30/2102. It was then refiled & signed in September 2012. Presumably the 2/7/2013 date is when the modified version was granted. It looks like they now plan on using the WLGX antenna for both stations. For some reason I thought the original plan might have been to put up a separate antenna. Will it be built? Time will tell... But if it were mine, I'd be running it up to the full 984'. Sadly, they were a full class C and could have gone to 2000' back in the day. Now that would have given the people of Lexington a signal.

What is with Clear Channel and all these tower moves? Didn't they move the 98.9 signal 3 times in the past 10 years? Haven't each move created a downgrade in signal? As for moving WAMZ closer to Lexington, it seems most of the nighttime programming is the same as 98.1 anyway.

98.9 was in Salem for decades when CC bought it. At that point, it went to Greenville...several miles back from the ridge of the knobs. So the move from Salem>Greenville was a huge upgrade and while the Greenville>WKRD move may have resulted in a few less square miles (due to the lower elevation), it resulted in more population within 15 miles or so of the tower. So in my eyes, the two CC moves of 98.9 made sense. The WAMZ one is less compelling, but apparently they think it is worthy of the costs involved. As I heard someone say, they are trading Elizabethtown for Downtown.

Because it is still a good station (despite being owned by Clear Channel) and it may give us another alternative for country music if 92.9, 98.1, or 100.7 isn't playing something we like at the current moment (i.e. flipping thru your presets!).

It's a shame the tall towers are in Indiana where a Class C couldn't exist, then the problem would have been solved.

Lexington had the same problem with their FM's. The big three blossomed to 100kw by the early eighties but antenna height was under 1000 feet HAAT; 92.9 was 850 feet, 94.5 was about 300 but was raised to 700 feet by the late eighties and 98.1 was at about 550 feet. There was talk of building a common tower that would include the TV stations but it never grew more than an idea.

What's this? No love for 96.1 Hank FM?

I listen to them and 107.7... Although 96.1 has a lot of static in south Lexington. Tower being in Georgetown doesn't help.

I worked there for the few months that Blue Chip owned 96.1. Pretty much anything south of Main St is static. That null to protect Stanford doesn't help.

Sorry about that! Completely forgot about 96.1! Yes, 92.9, 96.1, 98.1 and 100.7 are Lexington's main choices for country music. There are some people here (including me) that like to pull in 107.7, 93.9, 97.5, 104.9, or even 101.1 (depending on which side of town you're on, of course), but those are usually just the radio enthusiasts or the die-hard classic country fans who like the small-town classic country stations.

Apparently they think moving their tower closer to the Q103.1 tower will help them cut their losses in the east end.
That thought crossed my mind too :)
