WAPE vs. WFKS

Certainly, I thought this subject would have generated a lot of response. Anyway, thanks MusicMan for at least attempting to get some excitement going here.

One factor to APE's decline I'm sure can be traced to the departure of the Morning Zoo. Also, imagine if WFKS had WAPE's signal what they could accomplish. You have to give credit to WFKS for performing very well against the long established heritage station.

Morning drive is the prime time of radio and this daypart in Jax on most stations is what keeps many stations from reaching their true potential.

It seems no one in this market really cares as evidenced by the lack of response to virtually anything brought up. Even if there is little or nothing we can change, one would expect in a community the size of Jacksonville that there would be more than a handful of people who have the passion for the business of radio and have the motivation to express their thoughts....

The thing that has helped WFKS out over WAPE is the morning drive... MJ even though he is syndicated has been building an audience that is very loyal to him and it shows in the numbers because if I am not mistaken MJ is beating WAPE morning drive head to head that was one reason why the ZOO left because they saw it coming.

AND the latest trends with WFYV back up is suprising as well. WHEN WILL SOMEONE CHALLENGE WEJZ in the market or add a HOT AC STATION?

I don't think anyone needs to challenge WEJZ. Have you been listening to the station over the past few weeks. The music is all screwed up. They have played the same song twice in the same hour more than once in just the last 10 days. I have no idea who is scheduling the music now that Ed Fairbanks is gone but whoever it is, he or she is not paying attention at all. EJZ has made a number of programming changes over the past 6 months and the most noticable have been in the last 6 weeks. Listeners are not as comfortable with EJZ right now and I think the next few trends will show that. As far as WAPE is concerned, it will take time for the new morning show to build their P1's but they will. The show is better than average. John is right, the lack of interest on this board is a clear indication that the talent pool in jax is just not interested. I know there are a number of very talented people who live here that could get back on the air but they are not willing to work for free. There are too many other places for talented people to earn a good living, why work in Jax? It's just the way it is today.

Let's face it EJZ is doing well but if wannapd is right and that station is playing the same song twice in the same hour and that keeps happening, that will hurt their maintenance. In the last month someone on here mentioned how great Greg Parker sounds. I always figure if your on the air and you don't have the passion for radio then you shouldn't be there. About two weeks ago Greg was on, a song started and was going for 10 seconds then he jumps in starts talking a mile a minute like he couldn't of cared less. A part timer has no passion. Some full timers don't either. APE's afternoon guy Chase has passion. You can tell he's into it. You Rock Chase

While the subject of this thread is WAPE and WFKS, Al and Wannabe have brought up some interesting stuff about what is happening at EJZ.

Al - I was the one who mentioned Greg sounded great and that was based on the limited number of times I heard him on the way home. To me, he had strength and enthusiasm in his voice and I thought that would be a plus in countering listener AC perception of being too slow, dull and boring. There's no excuse for anyone to do anything that an average listener could perceive as not caring. Just like rotating the wrong song or two in the mix can disperse whatever audience is built up, saying doing/the wrong thing can do the same thing. For the few times an hour talent talks as is, it better be flawless.

And speaking of music mix, I think Wannabe is right on the money. Occasionally, I hear songs that would fit better on a traditional oldies station. I don't understand what the benefit is to play a Ben E. King tune out of 1961, the Supremes and even the Beatles. I think it was just yesterday I heard "Let it Be" and all the songs around it were 80s and 90s and it just sounded so out of place.

But I guess all of us can cherry pick errors on virtually every station. But apparently, the folks at Renda don't seem to learn from past mistakes of loading lots of responsibilities on too few resources.

I'm curious about responsibilites. I will confess my lack of knowledge here but shouldn't there be some fail safes in place? Wouldn't computer programming alert that a song was already selected within the last hour or two? And how about the talent? Wouldn't they notice a song that is about to come up in rotation was just played? I just don't understand how things like this can happen if you consider yourself a broadcast professional.

I have no doubt that WAPE will move back up a bit in time with the new morning show. KISS should continue to be a player as long as no one messes with the product too much.

On the other topic that has come up here, Cox and CC are both doing a good job with the music on all their stations, Renda on the other hand, is having some issues. They are doing their little no repeat work day thing and I am sure it is costing them money they did not intend to spend. Little glitches can be expected from time to time but too many will drive P1's away.

I am sure that most on this board are aware there are plenty of checks in the music scheduling software most PD's use. The problem is, (and I have seen this first hand) many don't use the software the way it was intended to be used including myself. Many PD's think they have to schedule music manually to get the sound and rotations they want. The key to making the software work for you is all in the setup of the songs, imaging, rules, and clocks. The software is loaded with tools that work well if ALL the data is filled in correctly. Most of the PD's in the world today are still using DOS to schedule music. There is no reason why anyone should be using DOS for anything. It's 2007...Windows works and it works well. I used it on several stations and had very few problems, 99% of the problems I had were my fault. It takes a little time to learn how to use the Windows version, it looks different. The Windows version gives more display options. It is much easier to track rule violations in windows. It cut my scheduling time by 30% when I got the hang of it. The company that supports the product is very good about answering any questions, even the dumb ones I was known to ask on a regular basis. It makes no sense to me to hear obvious scheduling mistakes when there is a tool out there that gives the PD absolute control over the library. If you are programming a music station try the windows version for awhile, it will make your life less complicated. Remember, PD's do allot more than just schedule music these days. There are less people in the building doing more work. The PD needs a scheduling tool that works quickly and schedules the sound he or she wants, day in and day out. There is a software product that makes it easy for the PD to get it right. They just need to take the time to learn how to use it.

I need to shut up and get a life!!
