WAPT 16 airs HSN on 16.6

Saturday, I noticed 16.6 was airing HSN (audio only) on my antenna. Sounds like a shopping subchannel.

That's because it is... HSN, the Home Shopping Network.

WAPT 16.6 is indeed HSN. It is the first subchannel in the Jackson, MS market to broadcast using MPEG-4, instead of the default MPEG-2 standard that all of the other subchannels use.

It appears that some broadcasters are starting to add channels using MPEG-4 to allow for more subchannels.

My 2009 Sharp 32" 720P, 2009 Coby 19" 720P and 2010 Viewsonic VT2730 27" 1080P sets do not show video, only audio. My 2015 Polaroid 1080P does show the MPEG-4 video, as does my 2020 Vizio 58" 4K TV. I am betting the 2015 Toshiba 55" 1080P will show the video as well.

In short, if your TV is only outputting audio, it means that the TV tuning unit used to receive does not support MPEG-4 video.
