WARM-AM

Hitpardae was originally on WEJL FM before it went to EZX. Their FM came on the air with the Hitparde format for a few years

You are correct on that. When I was a junior in high school I won this radio and it had full FM capability. I mean that was a big thing back in 1969-1970.
And I remember tuning in the HitParade on what is now 107, it was called WEJL FM and Kim Martin (who later went to WARM) and is still doing radio in Phila. under the name McClintock (think he went to WIBG initially) was the main voice.

WGBI FM had that muzak format which was like the elevators and had that all through my high school and college years until 1976. WVCD FM in Hazleton (which became 97.7 the Bear and the X) was also a beautiful music station. I remember hearing a very young Bill Washcko (now on WLYN TV) being the main night time voice doing the weather. That format was automated and cleaner than WYZZ FM.

Didn't Petrilla work for Bob Coradro at WWAX for a short time?

I remember seeing his desk at the old WARM building in 1995-1996 when Cordaro bought WARD and had the FM. I was doing board work for them and the sales office was in the old WARM newsroom. Sacrilege! Don't know about WWAX.

Kim Martin pretty much gets lost in the shuffle of radio history here in NE PA. Considering he did mornings on WEJL at a time when they were doing respectable numbers, and the fact that WARM lured him away, if only briefly, it seems like barely anyone remembers the guy. He did end up in Philly as McClintock, and I do believe that was actually his given surname. Rich baritone voice, very smooth and easy.

Yonk's story about WYZZ is at the same time both amazing and depressing. I kind of got the creeps just thinking about what it must've been like to play that garbage and work in such a weird environment. I say that mostly because I ended up in a rather depressing radio job myself many years ago.

Kim real first name is Clarence, no wonder he changed it. The main reason he went to WARM was to do the noon to 3 pm shift. After Len Wolosen was fired, he ended up on morings before going to WIBG.

Clarence???? No wonder Kim looked good to him!
Woloson got fired? Never knew that. Do you have a brief recap of how that happened?

I, too, was unaware that Lenny was fired, like yonk, sure would like to known the details. Loved listening to him!! ???

Does anyone know if WARM is for sale?? I'm sure citadel would want a fortune for it. At the risk of beating a dead horse, I still say that bringing back the old WARM (as much as possible- reverb, shotgun delivery, killer PAMS jingles, tight, knowledgeable, jocks) would work. And again, we've all talked about how much $$$ would need to be invested in the infrastructure. Regardless of the naysayers that swear that the oldies format is dead, this market would support it. Oh yeah, don't forget the sunday morning Polka shows!!!

I'd agree, always have, but you'd have to fine-tune, update, and put it on an FM signal. You could take the Boss Format that made KHJ and WFIL #1, but you'd have to make it FM. Actually, I'd love to try it, I know it would work if done right. Radio used to be fun to listen to 24/7, and it's just not that way today.

One question:Why does citadel own warm? They don't care to promote or fix the towers in falls which need thousands of dollars worth of work?Go to the wochovia arena and check out the steps.they advertise all their stations but warm. It's clear to me that most of the posts here seem to revolve around the mighty 590.How about a tribute website to warm dedicated to old airchecks, interviews and other stuff like musicradio77.com(wabc new york). This station in it's heyday drew in ratings that would embarress the current krz, magic and froggy's of today!Citadel what is wrong with you?The ratings are up despite the neglected signal.Sorry to vent but i just had to get this off my chest. long live warm 590!

Yes, the ratings are up. The oldies Shannon format is very good. I'm for taking baby steps and the fact that Citadel has not yet changed the format on this thing is a huge plus.
I agree it can work but has to go on an FM signal. Last night, I tuned it in when we went to bed. We're not crazy about the jazz on weekends on VIA so when I heard the first snores coming out of the wife's mouth, I put on WARM. What a mix of songs. Even heard Bill Cosby's "Little Ole Man".
I'm still playing the powerball and the first ten million are earmarked toward buying WARM.
The tribute website is very intriguing. If you know anyone who can actually build a quality web site, I got a ton of stuff. If you ever want to have a meeting on this contact me at [email protected].

long live warm 590!

Seven years of my life were spent there, it was huge, it was a monster, it was the best - it is no more, and never again will be. It lives, but only in our minds and as a significant footnote to the radio history of NE PA. Sorry to say that, but it's the harsh reality of it all...

masterg, you may be right. I had the honor of working there but it was the in the early 90's. I grew up with WARM and all I ever wanted to do was work there. Heck, I would have taken out the trash just to get in the door.

Here's a thought, years ago Paul Ciliberto (when he was at Cool 94) put together a Radio Greats reunion (in fact if you are who I think you are I had the pleasure of running your board during that show). Maybe we should encourage someone to do another one. Any takers?

Re: WARM-AM/ tribute website

The idea of a tribute website is a great idea; unfortunately I'm over in new York and have 3 jobs. Living here I always thought that WARM 590 was better than the new york stations in all ways. I'm not computer savvy so I can't be of much help. Too bad they couldn't put on a saturday nite live oldies show like WABC-77 in NYC...oh, yeah, thats right, it would cost citadel money....

Long live the mighty 590..... :'(

That Radio Greats Reunion was magnificent, and it was both a pleasure and privilege to have been part of it. Paul did a great job putting it together, I loved every second of it. It's painful to say, but that must have been at least 15-16 years ago. Same as you, Sarge, growing up with WARM made me about burst with pride when I found myself on the air on The Mighty 590 in the '70s. Sad to say, I don't know what station would have an ounce of interest in carrying a reunion.

I'm sure there's a place for personality driven, full service radio. Unfortunately, tastes have changed. Ownership has changed. That type of format requires a commitment and money. You know the rest. At least we can dream.

Radio Reunion

In Binghamton, during September, they have a radio reunion every year. People get together for a dinner and cocktail hour and I believe they play some tapes or soundchecks from days gone by. A number of old time radio personalities usually show up too. They've done it the past two years with success. Ray Ross was greatly involved in organizing it, he's at CC in Bing. I thought of doing this as a picnic during the summer. I don't have time to organize something like this as I am swamped. Anybody want to organize something like this?? You could call Ray to get tips on how to set this up.

That's like a whack upside the head - I guess it's where I fall in the big picture, an old time radio personality. And damned glad to be there! Being a has-been has only one requirement; you had to have been someone to qualify.

Anyway, nice, very nice, idea about a dinner, cocktails, etc. Hate to say this, but I doubt there'd be enough interest to make it happen...

Yonk,

That is a little know fact...Lenny was fired for a big no no in the biz. He was checking off spots as played when in fact he didn't play them all. I don't know how often it happened, but it was enough to get him the boot. It was keep very quite as you can imagine from the FCC getting wind of it.

Another interesting fact was after he was let go, he tried to return on a Saturday night to get all of his drop ins and so on. Bill Kelly was on the air and being a good company man, called the powers that be and refused to let him in.

Not to be a wiseguy, but I always thought this was pretty well known. As I recall, what made it far worse is that some of the spots were agency/national spots, meaning that they required an affadavit, which could have really caused serious problems.

Ray's no longer at CC-Bingo. I've got his email which I'll post for anyone who woud care to contact him. I believe that they had 100+ people last year coming from all over the U.S.
