WARM/MOJO/STAR & Blue Ash Fireworks

As always, the Blue Ash fireworks last night were outstanding. However,
the involvement of WARM 98, MOJO 94-9, and 96.5 THE STAR continues to be
sub-par and flat out annoying at times. Whoever was responsible for
choreographing the program needs to know that the constant interruptions
are disruptive and lead many to think the fireworks are over.

The tribute to outgoing Blue Ash City Manager Marvin Thompson was a nice
touch. Certainly well deserved. But it should have been done at the
beginning or early on during the fireworks when everyone was paying
attention and it would be clear that there was still more to come.
Obviously the City wanted to do this, but the radio folks should have
provided better guidance as far as placement within the program. Since it
was done after about 15-20 minutes of fireworks, many in the crowd assumed
they were over, got up and started leaving and never even paid attention
to the tribute.

And then, as I noted on this board last year, stopping the fireworks
before the grand finale to announce that it is now time for the grand
finale is simply ridiculous. And again, tons of people thought it was
over, immediately got up and started streaming for the exit gates…..which
was irritating to those who were still seated trying to watch the rest of
the show once it finally started back up.

But what made it all the more tasteless is the shameless plug inserted
during this moment for the WARM morning show. As if there isn’t enough
promotion for these stations all around with signs, DJs on the bandstand,
announcements blaring over the PA about the stations…..do they really need
to stop the momentum of a powerful fireworks display to announce the grand
finale and plug their morning show? I heard many comments through the
crowd afterwards about how annoying that was. After overhearing a few of
these comments as we were leaving, my wife said “WARM did
do a really bad job tonight,” citing the whole package….the poor selection
and execution of fireworks music, the interruptions, the constant
self-promotion…… And she is someone in their target demo, btw.

Blue Ash is one of this area’s classiest, most vibrant communities. WARM
98 has always been one of Cincinnati’s classiest radio stations. Too bad
however that WARM and its sister stations seem more like an intrusion than
an inclusion to this City’s celebration. A real turnoff.

Please. Re-think your approach for next year guys.

Is this because they have a new staff or a skeleton crew due to the recent slaughter of employees? I know the Warm Promotions Director was let go.

What "constant interruptions" are you referring to? There was a pause early on in the fireworks display that seemed unnatural, and turned out to be a problem with the computer controlling the launching.

Maybe I'm not as picky, I enjoyed the show thoroughly. I did think that the tribute to Marvin was kind of cheesy, but how could you *not* send off your city management that way?

I think your questions are answered in my original rant. ??? Note too that I mentioned the fireworks were “outstanding.” And I did not object to the tribute -- “The tribute to outgoing Blue Ash City Manager Marvin Thompson was a nice touch. Certainly well deserved.” My issue was with the timing, the breaking of the momentum, and the resulting effect that had on the crowd (as well as the other major momentum killer -- the pause for the morning show plug right before the finale). Again, go back and read my post more closely.

When I hear those who are not radio-oriented say what I'm already thinking, then I know it's not just me. I figure there may be something to it. That's one reason I posted about this.
