WARM off the air????

I was in the area yesterday and there was no broadcast on 590, not even a carrier....did they pull the plug on the ol' girl??? Kinda liked the oldies programming; even though it's canned.....anyone know anything???

What a shame the once Mighty 590 has gotten to this point...like the slow death of an old friend......

oldies4ever/warm590 ???

Probably transmitter problems again.I had it on this morning and it sounded ok.This afternoon forget it.Must be the weather.

I don't care if WARM is off the air its a remnant of the past. The future for AM radio is automation no on air personality overhead staff stations with (3) employees this is the future for AM radio

What happened to the yankee games? Did that two week forlough off the air cause the yankees to yank the warm broadcasts? That's citadel for you. ;)

The Yankees have never been on Warm this season, from what I understand the Yankees network wanted too much money to air
the games

Actually, I think the future of AM radio is garage door openers, but I've said that before...

;D

I would think you would have to change from using AM and use FM in the 'Standard Broadcast Band' since every time a thunderstorm blows through, the differing 'static' patterns might have all the gardage doors in town opening and closing at the same time. It would be pretty funny to see though...

;D

Recent transmitter problems and the cost to fix the transmitter had left WARM radio off the air in April for 2 weeks and it looked like it was off for good. The current owner of WARM radio in Plains Township is Citadel. What does THAT tell you? They want these stations to run by themselves.

For the past few years, my father was running the boards for the baseball games and Nascar. He also had a Country Western show on Saturday nights and a Sunday Polka show. Both of those shows were pulled. And not because there were not enough listeners. His callers would light up his board continuously when he was on the air. Citadel screwed him. This station will not survive without DJ's and the interchange between DJ and listeners/callers. I simply don't listen to radio that is syndicated. I want to know I can call in and request a song, or make my voice heard on a "LIVE" talk show.

WNEP-TV reported...

http://www.wnep.com/wnep-luz-warm-radio-ceases-broadcasting,0,5199594.story

Radio veteran and historian Shadoe Steele works for Entercom Broadcasting. "It was a major transmitter problem, which will cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix this. Would it be worth investing tens of thousands of dollars into a station where you have 33 radio stations in this market and it came in at 31? The answer is no," Steele said.

He has been broadcasting in northeastern Pennsylvania for more than 30 years. He said WARM radio, or AM 590, has been on a rating decline since the 1980s.

But there was a time from 1959 to 1980 when WARM radio dominated the airwaves.

"In the 1960s, when there was very little FM stations in our market WARM radio at one point had a 63 share in the rating. These days in radio, if you get an eight or nine share, you're a winner. They had a 63 share, 63 percent of those listening to radio had WARM tuned in," Steele added.

"WARM radio was very much like what Channel 16 is today. People felt they belonged to the station and felt a big part of the station. In its heyday WARM had over 50 percent of the audience in radio," said former general manager Phil Condron. He, like many others in our area, has fond memories of WARM days.

"WARM was a great radio station. I grew up with that station. I remember going up to Rocky Glen for WARM day. That was fantastic. A lot of memories and it's unfortunate that it's no longer with us," said one WARM fan.

"I have fond memories of Harry West. he was the most enjoyable. It's been a long time, you know," said another fan.

"I remember him (Harry West) standing out in the rain broadcasting, in the snow broadcasting. They were tough. They were tough guys back then," said Ten Jasinski of Pittston.

WARM radio days may be gone but it certainly is not forgotten northeastern Pennsylvania, a place often referred to as WARMland. Citadel could not be reached for comment.

On April 23rd, WARM Radio returned to the airwaves mysteriously, and there were no comments from Management.

Since being on the air, my Dad did not return. He is done.

I worked with sam at ward in the 1990's.It was a blessing to know this fine man. :)

:) Yes, both right. Thank you, he'd be happy to know that he was liked and respected. It's an honor to be his daughter.

I remember I friend who worked at WARD with this 'person'. The telephone system was jury rigged and if you pushed down a bottom on the phone in the control room, you could listen to anyone's conversation in cue. He was caught doing nthat once or twice. NOT the nice guy he appeared to be on the surface he was also heard talking about people behind their backs at remotes in cue.

When I was first trying to get into radio in 1980,taking demo tapes to all the stations in the market,Sam was one of the few program
directors in the area (at WARD) that listened to my tape with me there, and gave some good advice.
That is something I always remembered through out my broadcasting career.

I, too, had the pleasure of working with Sammy during my many tenures at Citadel. The guy is a prince! When I was working at the CYC in Wilkes-Barre Sammy saw me waiting for a bus on Wyoming Ave in the rain and gave me a ride to the CYC himself. That aside, I really had a good time working with him at WARM. Tell him I said HI.

I also had the pleasure of working with Sammy for years........Keeth said it best " He is a prince".
Please give him my best!

Sam "The Barber" Liguori. What a great guy!!!!!!!!! He was given the nickname of "The Barber" by one of the Accu-Weather guys who noted that Sam never worked at WARM on Mondays.

I can only speak to the Sam I know and worked with and he was a great guy. Always willing to help younger people learn the ropes, willing to share his insight and experience....and was a very hard working man. As was Jim Ward and Joe Gries and the rest of the vets at WARD. I would gladly work with Sam again, any place, anytime.
