Guest
The Northeastern Pennsylvania radio station WARM 590 is recalled through archival photos and interviews with the station's on-air personalities. Host: Bill Kelly.

Monday, June 01 — 10:00pm
44.1 - WVIA Public Media Studios

Must be begging time again. The show is excellent, and you can count on it being trotted out whenever it's time for a Beg-A-Thon.

When ISN'T it begging time anymore? ::)

Yes Bill Kelly has to make sure he keeps his $150.000 salary and the regular staff makes from $6.25 to 7.25 an hour.

All the money goes into programming? I think NOT

C'mon, guys! Why the cynicism over the 'public' stations? Surely they are not guilty of the same executive excesses as their private counterparts. Right?

Besides, it's the programming SO MANY PEOPLE are dying for. Honestly, the fact that insufficient numbers of viewers are available to make the product viable on 'regular' broadcasts JUST DOESN'T MATTER. It's the quality, the integrity, the awe-inspiring honesty of the programs that make ALL the difference!

::)

I was prepping my show when the phone rang.

FM: We're calling to ask you about renewing your FM membership.
Me: It's a little early, isn't it? It's not due until later.
FM: We want to get before the fiscal year runs out.
Me: That's borrowing money against next year; not good.
FM: What we're doing...
Me: Let's cut to the chase. How much do you want?
FM: Do you want to continue at your $120 level?
Me: I never gave at the $120 level; it was always $70.
FM: That's right, but you donated money through the year.
Me: That's better.
FM: You can get a mug with Liza Mazzarelli at $120.
Me: I don't want to drink out of Liza's head.
FM: Then for $70, you can get...
Me: Here's my VISA card number; I'm busy now, thanks.

Tom: it takes you and 1,249 other $120 donors just to cover the salary....

WOW

Hmmmm.... Tom, I'm accepting donations for my retirement fund, if you're still busy just email me that credit card number....

Scott:
Will Tom get a Pet Guy coffee cup with that donation?

I have never had any love for so-called Public radio or TV. Programs like WARM-Land Remembered are few and far between. Other than that most program offerings have been scripted for them by the Democratic party. I have a REAL problem with ANY of my tax money going in that direction. The real exceptional shows like Antiques Roadshow, Masterpeice Theatre, & Jacques Pepin's cooking programs could all find very suitable sponsor support on many cable channels. Back in '94 I cheered outloud when Gingrich said that PBS should be zeroed out of the budget. I know others won't agree with me. But that's the way I feel, and nobody will EVER be able to talk me out of my dislike for tax-payer broadcasting. Let 'em sell spots!!

Unlike "Fair & Balanced" (ha ha ha) Faux News.

I think the only promotional items I have left are Pet Guy thongs in XXL... Tom will that work? I'll even autograph it if you'd like.....

Unlike "Fair & Balanced" (ha ha ha) Faux News.

Um, Fox News Channel isn't on the government dole and is doing quite well. In fact, it seems that the latest ratings trend has significantly diminished the ratings of MSNBC and CNN.

Hmmm... 8)

Maybe the public is rejecting the fawning bias presented in the last election?

Meanwhile, "Public" broadcasting knows where its bread is buttered...and what party holds the butter knife. As mentioned above, let 'em sell spots. Or at least call a spot a spot and not some couched language designed to circumvent the so-called rules...

Abolish all government support of public broadcasting. It's just not right.

They are selling spots, but just don't call them that. Those sponsor "thank-you's" during every radio break sure sound like short commercials to me. I could almost live with that if they didn't interrupt their regular programming so often to ask for more. I'll never voluntarily give a dime to public radio or TV.

Of course they are selling spots. The actual government-speak title for their spots is "donation enhancement". They can run any spot they want to, as long as it is "generic" and makes no mention of price or sales promotions. You can watch Fairway's Richie Molinaro promoting Subarus..what a total joke.

The good father mentions Fox News. As Jeff pointed out..they are not on the government dole. In fact, if PBS was a real company instead of just another division of Obama Enterprises like GM & AIG, I couldn't care less if they espoused pedophilia, as long as it's on their own dime. The market will decide what works and what doesn't. As I mentioned in an earlier post there are any number of PBS offerings that could and would find commercial support on the various cable & satellite channels. And, just like ExMagic says..they will never get a voluntary penny from me! I've already had to give them far, far more than they are worth through my state and federal taxes.

Seems like we have two very good discussion going here at the same time...

1. Is PBS/NPR still an important part of the broadcasting landscape?

2. Media Bias, both left and right.

What say we break them out into their own threads?

Answer:

1) For a while, it was not. Discovery, TLC, A&E and History covered the territory pretty well. But A&E, TLC and (to some extent) Discovery have gone off the tracks and thru the meadows. So PBS still has some function.

2) I do think PBS is more Fair & Balanced than the other nets. However, the others at least let their take on the news be known. Faux is conservative, NBC is more liberal, CNN is probably best down the middle. You know your product and choose what you want to watch. It doesn't take long to figure who matches your own leanings.

3) NPR is, I think, also balanced. Conservatives will scream "Lefties" at what they feel is the slightest on the liberal side; Liberals will have difficulty when NPR broadcasts conservative programming. The "rights" are just louder when they shout.
