Warner Movies On HBO Max

Warner Brothers Pictures will release all of their 2021 theatrical movies on HBO Max on the same day:

Warner Bros’ HBO Max Movie Deal: WarnerMedia CEO On Strategy: The Deadline Q&A – Deadline

So people have a choice of seeing movies in the theater or watching on HBO Max

CNBC's Jim Cramer says it's the death of movie theaters:

HBO Max Movie Releases Are 'Death Knell' for Theater Stocks, Jim Cramer Says (msn.com)
This was expected given that companies like AMC were reporting bankruptcy and also theaters were ordered to shut down due to the COVID-19 stay at home orders.

And the blowback was swift.

In the early days of TV, all of the major film studios refused to sell movies to the TV networks. They wanted to continue to support the theaters. But one studio co-operated with the networks: Disney. When the other studios saw how much business TV got for Disney, they all wanted in. The early stages of streaming video is bumpy. People are still looking for the best system rather than subscribe to all of them. A few of the strongest services will survive. But yes, these are the early days.

I just saw an ad for a new Tom Hanks movie called "News Of the World." The ad said very emphatically at the end: "Opening In Theaters on December 25." So obviously not a Warner movie. In fact it's Universal Studios.
