WARNING: WYAY will not Start News at 5am (more details inside)

I have just been handed information from a source close to the operations of "All News 106.7"...... At 5am on Tuesday morning WYAY will stunt with a 12-hour documentary on the "history of news in Atlanta and how the new format will run. Then at 5pm, ABC News will air and Cheryl Castro and Greg Black will start airing live, local, and hard hitting journalism about the Atlanta Metro Area."

So, I guess we don't have to get up at 5am after all. Yay! Although, I might just catch a good 8 hours of the "All News" documentary.

WYAY directing listeners to Journey

They say: "Starting Tuesday, Listen to Atlanta's new Home for greatest hits: Journey 97.9."

Re: WYAY directing listeners to Journey

Told you so. The real question is if Journey will ease up on the 90s and add some 70s.

Hopefully! But if Cumulus was smart, they'd just move the entire Atlanta's Greatest Hits format from 106.7 to 97.9.

Oh man I hope this is true,so we get 2 flips tomorrow?????

I think that they will stay on as "journey", but focus on the 70s and 80s. More so that the 90s.

That would be great...Still wish they would thrown in some psychedelic 60's.

We are all supposed to consolidate the All News thread into one. Sorry to clutter!

Alright, the documentary is actually 4 hours and will be repeated 3 times/ says my source.

I just heard an old aircheck of FOX97, this is going to be a happy and sad, or should I say "bittersweet", day. I bet we get oldies again in the next year.

I hope they don't add in a lot of 70's or any 60's. I happen to like the perfect 80s/90s mix. Maybe 97.1 should shift their playlist around than Journey. If 97.9 goes oldies, that will be deleted off of my presets.

Just briefly heard a broadcast of ABC News on WYAY-HD2 and Cheryl Castro and Gregg Black were on and introduced themselves. Sounded pretty good, with both having great delivery. Then, it abruptly shut off. Still oldies on WYAY-HD1

I disagree abouth another oldies station, even tho' I like oldies. And I'm on the sad side of this.

A couple of other threads have mentioned the difference between classic hits (pop) and classic hits (rock). For a while after dumping True Oldies, AGH tended too much toward the rock side of that balance for my taste, but in the last few months, to me, they started throwing a few 60's into the mix and I was enjoying it music-wise almost as much as True Oldies.

That being said, I don't think we'll have 60's/70's classic hits (pop) in Atlanta again, any more than we'll have a 50's oldies or standards (both of which I also like) station again.

And I blame the internet and satellite (Sirius/XM). IF there were NO WAY to get the music that SOME (althought it's a small number and growing smaller) people enjoy, I think that radio would step in to fill the void. But with Pandora on my smartphone and either a MP3 jack on the car audio or a handsfree bluetooth with an FM transmitter, I can have my standards or my 50's or my 60's or my 70's. Same for folks with satellite.

What am I missing? Local personalities and local news, traffic and weather, and local advertisers. Even AGH, by virtue of it trying to reach the entire Atlanta audience, wasn't very "local".

I understand the nature of the demographics --- yes, the older listeners may have more money but we are brand-loyal and not prone to impulse purchases, yadda yadda yadda.

But just because it's true and I understand it, doesn't mean I can't be sad about it.

Something tells me that 97.1 is going to shift a skosh harder and newer...

I can sort of understand that, but if that's the case, why is the format thriving in other top 20 markets like NYC, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, DFW, Phoenix, Denver, Tampa, Seattle, Philadelphia, Detroit, Minneapolis, etc.? Sometimes at or very near the top of the books? Why is it such a struggle in Atlanta? I still think it's been a parade of the format executed poorly.

San Francisco was a market where classic hits was presumed dead, after CBS ran KFRC 99.7 in to the ground then did a poor attempt of bringing it back at 106.9 (later went to KCBS-FM simul). CC came along a year or 2 later and put it on KKSF/now KOSF 103.7 and the format is doing better than it has done in years there, and the best numbers for that frequency in years. AGH lacked truly good presentation and a clear focus, that's what killed it IMO.

I hate this station with all my might. 978.1 that is, I hope Journey goes hard oldies............

I tend to agree. I was in favor a year ago of this: simul 94.7 WLS in Atlanta on 106.7. I thought, hey it's better than what we have now…from a music standpoint. AGH had a chance when still owned by ABC/Citadel, but Cumulus' plan from the point of buying Citadel was starting ALL NEWS. That's why WLS had worked and WYAY hasn't. Cumulus invested in WLS. They even rehired John Records Landecker. On WYAY, they couldn't even find decent PM drive talent. That's why it was a mess. Cumulus has the power to create great stations- some they put effort into (some, the opposite.). CBS is foolish to not start oldies with Steve Craig, Alpha Stevens, Steve McCoy, and Randy & Spiff available. Now, that would be a great station.

I totally agree 100%! Why else would Cumulus have let Randy & Spiff go back when they did?

I've been listening to AGH all day and at 5:00 AM or whenever the last song is played the 106.7 presets on all of my radios will be deleted. When I want my local news and weather I will still listen to WSB at the top or bottom of every hour. I can't understand why anyone would want to listen to an all news station all day long. 15 minutes is more than enough to get all the news you need.

The real test for All News 106.7 will be the next time something happens in Atlanta like the severe weather Atlanta seems to have (i.e. the tornado in Downtown Atlanta or the other big news stories like the Brian Nichols shooting or the Olympic Park Bombing).

As far as Journey being the new home for Atlanta's Greatest Hits, I bet you won't hear any Motown, Beach Boys or Beatles just to name a few. Hopefully CBS will finally do something about DAVE and make it oldies/Classic Hits and Atlanta just might have a good Classic Hits station ... something this city has never had.

Alright, at this moment..... I am going to bed! Goodnite. See you at 5am for the launch. I will be starting a thread at 4:57 with the last song - and hopefully will be recording. I will post later.

Bill

Night Bill... we are watching Tora! Tora! Tora! ... as soon as Pearl is finished being blown up, I will also be heading for bed. And if the alarm is annoying enough, I will be up for the 5AM launch.
