I just heard an old aircheck of FOX97, this is going to be a happy and sad, or should I say "bittersweet", day. I bet we get oldies again in the next year.
I disagree abouth another oldies station, even tho' I like oldies. And I'm on the sad side of this.
A couple of other threads have mentioned the difference between classic hits (pop) and classic hits (rock). For a while after dumping True Oldies, AGH tended too much toward the rock side of that balance for my taste, but in the last few months, to me, they started throwing a few 60's into the mix and I was enjoying it music-wise almost as much as True Oldies.
That being said, I don't think we'll have 60's/70's classic hits (pop) in Atlanta again, any more than we'll have a 50's oldies or standards (both of which I also like) station again.
And I blame the internet and satellite (Sirius/XM). IF there were NO WAY to get the music that SOME (althought it's a small number and growing smaller) people enjoy, I think that radio would step in to fill the void. But with Pandora on my smartphone and either a MP3 jack on the car audio or a handsfree bluetooth with an FM transmitter, I can have my standards or my 50's or my 60's or my 70's. Same for folks with satellite.
What am I missing? Local personalities and local news, traffic and weather, and local advertisers. Even AGH, by virtue of it trying to reach the entire Atlanta audience, wasn't very "local".
I understand the nature of the demographics --- yes, the older listeners may have more money but we are brand-loyal and not prone to impulse purchases, yadda yadda yadda.
But just because it's true and I understand it, doesn't mean I can't be sad about it.
