WIHS in CT
Because of (what I consider a JAMMER)

translator on 104.9, WIHS is not at all receivable in Bridgeport, most of Fairfield and Stratford, and parts of Milford.

Before that JAMMER was allowed to operate, WIHS had a perfectly usable signal all the way into Fairfield.
I have very mixed feelings about WIHS. I thank God that they are there, but they sure could do with some UPDATING!! :-\
On a scale of 1-10 for Christian radio, I'd give WIHS a 5. (Harold Camping gets a zero.) I'd give K-Love 7.5. (K-Love loses 2.5 points for their extremely tight playlist. Seriously.)
One of WIHS' most absolutely MADDENINGLY ANNOYING

aspects, is their incessant interruption of any music segments with short, drop-in programming. (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 minute vignettes.) You seldom get to hear more than two songs in a row because of that. I call it a "Fractured Format".

It is beyond annoying, it's absolutely MADDENING! (To me, and a few others I know.)
With the exception of two, 1-hour "request hours", they forbid (yes, FORBID!)

their announcers from saying the names of the artists and titles of the music!

???
According to two, independent surveys, conducted by two different newspapers, about 15 years apart, they asked their readers a simple question: "What is your NUMBER ONE pet peeve about listening to the radio?"
In BOTH surveys, 80% of respondents said, "When they don't tell you the names of the artists and songs." So, on a daily basis, they consistantly annoy 80% of their listeners. *ON PURPOSE*!!
Don't get me wrong, there are some really GOOD PEOPLE working there, and I am still in contact with some that have left. I have visited their facility a number of times in years past, and it was very nice.

They do have an audience that supports them. (They are non-comm, and almost seem to "rub that in listeners faces" every chance they get, almost like a "dig" at commercial stations.) :-\
I have listened to them many times throughout the years, and found their music selections are a little outdated, and many are lower-quality re-makes of well-known Christian songs. (One of my pet peeves are poor-quality remakes of songs!) :-\
Oh yeah, they are also mono, and REFUSE to go stereo.

Yes,
REFUSE!
So, for those many reasons, I find myself seldom listening. It is sad, really, because they ARE CAPABLE of doing SO MUCH MORE to serve their listeners than they do! :-\ Yes, they are LOCAL, and even staffed LIVE, 24/7!
I believe the only reason they can "get away with" such bad programming decisions as these is because they have, truly, been a total MONOPOLY for Christian radio (on FM) in central CT since they signed-on in 1969. Even more sadly, their programming philosophy seems to remain stuck in that year. :'( "This is how we have always done things, and this is how we will ALWAYS do things!"

most definitely appears to be their motto. (This is more than just my opinion, several former employees have shared this with me.)
It breaks my heart, because as I said, this station could do SO MUCH MORE to serve their audience! :'( For one thing, DROP the plethora of DROP-INS!

For another, DROP that insane prohibition against announcing the artists and titles!!
Yeah, I have some STRONG opinions, can't you tell? ;D
20 years in the biz, talking with all kinds of people, attending a few trade shows, reading all kinds of articles, and trying a few experiments (within limits) on the air, have taught me quite a bit. I am most thankful for it!

I have also worked with quite a wide variety of folks, including several different managers during that time. (I didn't aspire to hold a management position at WFIF, so I never did.)
An interesting anecdote: While working at WFIF, I hosted a morning music segment, during the summer, when the station could sign on at 6am. It ran 6-7, so it was only on the air for part of the year. Thus, it became my tradition to make the last week of August an all-request week. (It started in the mid/late 90's as being just the last day, but was so popular, I expanded it into a week. Listeners absolutely LOVED it!) Sometime in the early 2000's, I believe, WIHS suddenly started doing an "All request day" on August 31'st. Coincidence? You decide.
LOL! While I was posting this, Mike posted his much more succinct opinion! LOL!!!
