was at40 ever in philly

klutch: I was fairly sure WMVB was still running it, but then again, it's been almost 30 years and the memory isn't as good as it was, so you may be correct. I used to have the disc with the WMVB shout out on it, but God knows where that is now. WMVB ran it on Saturday mornings, and after Ken Cooper left, AT40 may have left as well, maybe mid to late 1980. WMVB then did a local Oldies show called "Saturday Solid Gold" hosted by Joe Gorgo. Joe was a nice guy, but he wasn't Casey.

I remember listening to AT40 twice on the old BZ13. Once was in late 1979 on a Sunday afternoon. The other time was Easter weekend in 1980 on Saturday morning. Both times I was in Penn's Grove visiting family and JFTR the station was barely coming in as you might imagine. Maybe BZ13 dropped it by the middle of the year. I do recall a directory I had which listed WWBZ as the affiliate as of June 1979.

I'm proud to say that it was on WAMS in Wilmington from show number one, July 4, 1970.

I know ... I ran it and still own the vinyl disks and the red, white & blue box with "liner notes" it came in ... after I fished it out of the trash the next day. One of my proudest possessions.
I suppose that they were one of the seven, with another being WPGC AM/FM. In my not-so-humble opinion, it's a shame WAMS couldn't keep it going until 1980 or whenever they went country as that are was bereft of an affiliate for some time. Maybe it was too expensive to keep going?

WMVB stopped running AT40 when it expanded to 4 hours...the station had changed ownership and I think, if I remember correctly, thought the cost was too high. That's when I hosted "Satuday Solid Gold" from 9am - Noon on Saturdays in the late 1970s.
