Was hoping for a Party 93.1 return.....

This brings to mind what another poster theorized in regards to more dance pop product on rhythmic and CHR's........

........it can actually work against a market's need for a "pure dance" type of station.

KTU continues to surge in the ratings with their current based uptempo sound and gold based dance hits sprinkled in. For many people KTU is the dance station in NYC and always has been.Makes one wonder if we're into edgy dance music or just on the fringe?

I used KTU as an example because I can't think of any other dance heritage station that is still around in the country.

The station that was Party 93.1 in Miami, that turned into a rock station is now a "lite" station.

They used to stream. They're on 93.1 HD-2. If only a "friend" would stream that feed...

It may not be commercial, but C-89.5 in Seattle (KNHC) has been around MUCH longer than 'KTU.

'KTU may be dance for some, but then what 92.3 Now is doing is picking up that pace and bringing that aspect of dance over to a CHR side. And I agree with Jay R....BOTH.

Again-

And while I like what 92.3 Now is doing (and I have listened to them quite a bit)....they don't break any dance songs. At least not yet.

Breaking new dance songs isn't the job of a CHR. It's the job of a dance station like The Vibe. I think we're doing our job. We're seeing others pick up what we're playing - including other dance outlets like BPM. The best of the dance format should cross over to pop. What usually happens is some DJ thinks a dance song is good and pushes it to CHR - but the song isn't a mass appeal tune. CHR programmer takes advice form their mixshow DJ and adds the song - it tanks. Guess dance doesn't work on CHR.... wrong! Look at "Stereo Love" - the song came out in 2009 and slowly found its way to the US. The song does not have the traditional dance feel to it. It's very European yet is huge! The next person who tells me something is 'too European' will lose all credibility.

The amazing thing about "Stereo Love" is that its even crossing over in some circles with the Hip Hop crowd. I'm not saying its all across the board but there's an acknowledgment of the song's popularity without mocking it.

And I agree that CHR's job is to play the hits. That's why I don't like to pit a 92.3 Now against KTU perse because at the end of the day,KTU will most likely play the proven dance hits when 92.3 NOW or any other CHR for that matter moves to the next hot trend on hit radio.

Stereo Love happens to be Top 5 on KTU and # 1 on 92.3.....the obvious winner is Edward Maya and to a lesser extent dance music. There's a whole new demographic that's just discovering that song.....oh yes, that's the mass appeal thing.

In reality, even though there are less "pure dance" outlets in the US,that gives stations like the VIBE and BPM more influence on what might become the next big dance hit.

You would think 18-34 is a better demographic than 55+. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a great Soft AC, but such formats are becoming rare since 55+ isn't advertiser friendly.

Wish Party 93.1 would stream since they probably only have 10 listeners because HD radio is soooooooo successful.

Agreed!

By the way Edger: Kudos on the App. 8)

I always usually tend to agree with Mike, And I think The Vybe,, which leans more mainstream,, and also the mix of Old and New on Energy 98 is a great formular... Makes me wonder If they would just let Mike program every dance station, aside from the schools, they would be somewhat successful.
