Art Bell is/was the best for out-there topics.
While he dealt with much less vetted 'Guests' than Noory does, he made it interesting.
Often you could feel his distrust of what the kooks were saying but he kept it together as if it was legit.
Yes you could sometimes sense the incredulity in Art's voice but you could tell that nevertheless he was having fun with it which made it interesting for the listeners. And like someone said above, driving on an open highway with thousands of stars in the sky and Art Bell on the radio was special. Even lying in your bed and the lights off was good, kind of like ghost stories around a campfire.
Those late night shows are great for bringing out the whacks. Kind of like Larry Kings old Mutual Radio show. I used to do a late night drive to Cleveland from Detroit and listen to Larry. The callers made the show.
In Cincinnati, WSAI's Sam Jones (the "bored"-op) made the show with lots of extraneous noises & drop-ins... People even called up Larry to complain &, in his usual brash & abrupt manner, he'd tell 'em he didn't know what the hell they were talking about & to call station management... If they had done that, station "management" wouldn't have known what the hell they were talking about either!!! It was fun to listen to...
