Was Ted Doing as well as the Blitz?

Just checked out the Winter Arbitrons.

The Blitz is doing REALLY poorly for such a big signal. I don't think even its predecessor of 15 years ago -- Classic Rick Magic 99.7 -- ever sinked below a 3 like this. Relative to signal and budget, I don't think the Blitz is doing much -- if any -- better than Ted. (Revenue may be a different story...I don't know...) In fact, Ted was up 30% from Summer (although I don't know how much statistical significance that has on a base of about 1 point).

BNS-FM is doing almost as poorly, threatening to sink below a 3.

WODB and mega up-and-down CD-101 are neck-and-neck with Ted in Ted's final book, despite much greater spending and marketing effort. Too bad the Adult Hits format never got a fair shake in Columbus because of where it ended up on the dial. Indy has TWO Adult Hits stations that are doing OJ in their demos -- both on big signals.

WSNY had a big bump from Christmas music, while 93.3 (a station I REALLY can't stand because it's such a waste of a prized "new" big signal) got a lot less Xmas bump than last year.

On the big-smiles side, NCI and CVO also had nice jumps.

Last time I tuned in on Saturday afternoon, I heard 3 90s rock tracks in a row. Not sure what direction they are trying to go, but that 300 song playlist is going to kill them.

For the record, I meant FALL Arbitrons, of course. There were few other typos, too, e.g. OJ for OK. Wish they allowed you more time to edit posts.

The Blitz has been in a long nosedive. The new book should be interesting.

I wonder why WWCD's rating are so fluky?... They are all over the place.
Is it the Blue Jacket's dragging them down?
Or is it the demo they are shooting for is likely to make the jump to Satellite?

No, we were doing double-digits long before Stern was added to mornings.

Double Digits?? You must mean in the demo, right?

Funny thing is, the post-Stern Blitz looked like it was making a big comeback for a book or two, with really solid numbers. I don't mean right after Stern left, but later. Lately, though, it's been a nosedive. If they don't start picking back up soon, it's obvious that station needs a format change or major retooling of the current format &/or morning show. No matter how much Hal personally likes Active Rock and management wants to keep a good thing going, I think they should be realistic about how tastes have changed some. That said, this is just my two cents. And I know there are still several really successful active rockers out there. But when they're sinking below where they ever were with Classic Rock 15 years ago, it's time to consider some major changes.

Years ago, I remember reading an article in either Columbus Monthly or one of the free weekly papers about how everyone should enjoy listening to Blazor because he was so good he wouldn't be in Comumbus much longer, yet I notice he's still there.

I don't get back to Columbus much these days so I have two questions: How's Ronnie doing on Afternoon Drive and what was the real reason Rik "Scoop" Elliott left the station? From what I heard he didn't leave because he wanted to. BTW, he's now doing Morning Drive at WHBC in Canton.

So you USED to work at the Blitz? I'm interested to know what you're doing now? For the record, Blazor is a fantastic talent and is employed at a decent station in a fairly big market. Who cares if he hasn't moved on to a bigger city?

I'm with you, Hollis. Some of us LIKE being in Columbus. Mark is apparently happy here as am I. We started in radio together and both of us saw only NYC back then...we got older, settled down and changed our priorities I guess.
Lights and fame and 24 hour pizza deliveries are wonderful things, but traffic you can move through and a decent cost of living doesn't suck.

For the record, I have nothing against Blazor. He's a decent enough talent, and let's face it, alot of people in our profession get comfortable where they are and go no further. That's fine. I worked in many small markets early in my career and I could pick out the people who were going to stay exactly where they were and were fine with it. I loved working in Columbus, it's a great city and I would have been happy to work out the rest of my career there, but someone who was too weak to try to move on made up my mind for me. Fortunately, his decision, that actually came from the brainless higher-ups at the station, led me to a top-20 market station. I owe them a debt of gratitude.

Well, it's been over a month since I started this thread, and the Winter Ph 1 is out. Turns out the Blitz hasn't started to move up. In fact, they edged down a few more tenths of a point.

When you continue to play back-to-back worn out 90s rock songs, people will tune out.

Here's some food for thought...What about The Blitz flipping to Alternative and becoming the Columbus equivalent of Cincinnati's WSWD(94.9 The Sound)? Great station, great imaging(WSWD that is)...They'd most likely kick the pants off of CD101 with 'BZX's giant (Directional) signal, and anything is an improvement over what they've been doing in the ratings and trends lately.
