Was there ever smooth jazz radio in Providence?

Just was wondering, was it at 99.7? Is there a chance of that format in this market?

Jazz was on the air forever in Rhode Island on 100.3 WOTB out of Newport. The only format that stuck on that frequency. Now it's WKKB Spanish Top 40.

You must be like 18 to ask that question.

It is presently on the air on WSNE HD2. They even have more DJ's then WSNE HD1!

OK... now hold up your hands. Who here actually owns an HD radio? I thought about it once for about two minutes until I realized that it would be a waste of money to spend $150 to only get 5 additional stations.

And of those additional stations, how many would you actually listen to. Here in the Hartford market if I had one, I would listen to 2 on a regular basis (93.7 HD2 Reggaeton and 102.9 HD2 50s/60s Oldies) and a 3rd and a 4th on rare occassions (96.5 HD2 for Rockcats Minor Leage Baseball and 106.9 HD2 if I'm in the mood for Classical).

I can already access 6,000 online streams. I'm listening to an Australian Radio station from 10,000 miles away as I type this. The audio is being fed into my home Stereo and the quality is crystal clear! There isn't a single format that I can't find online. They are all there. I didn't even have to spend $150 for a seperate radio. Imagine that! This HD radio stuff was certainly a bunch of hype over nothing. Do you think they are ready to pull the plug yet?

You're answer to them pulling the plug on HD being pulled. NO. Here's why.FM went through the same phase in the 60's and HD in my opinion will replace AM in a few years like what they did with TV.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but I thought I heard you can apply for a licence if a FM is not carrying an HD chanel.

For example if 93.3 was'nt carryibng an HD channel on HD-1 or 2. Any Joe Shmo can apply for that license. That is why alot of stations now carry HD sub channels so that nobaody can apply for a license.

I still believe AM is on it's way out. That is why AM's now simulcast on FM aka. WPRO-630 on 99.7 and some AM's just go dark now.

As far as AM stations bring simulcast on FM. I never saw that as being anything other than a station just trying something different to pull in some ratings. Many times in the past it hasn't even worked out well. So the FM has just switched formats again. I certainly do not believe that simulcasting on an FM frequency has anything to do with AM stations being on their way out. As a matter of fact I think AM stations will continue to live on for a very long time.

Actually, the jazz was on WOTB mostly when it was on 107.1. It moved to 100.3 in the late 1980s to make way for Fun 107 in Fairhaven.

All anyone has to do is either read the headlines on the front page of this site, or read the Tom Taylor newsletter, and it becomes all too apparent that the trend of major market AM formats migrating to FM is not going away. If anything, it's picking up speed.

While AM may never fully 'go away', it will never have the prominent role it did when it was the only broadcast game in town......the days when the typical housewife would fire up the family's floor model vacuum tube set to listen to "Ma Perkins", on CBS......or "The Guiding Light", on NBC Red.

Since those days, many metro areas have grown to the point where very few AM signals fully service them anymore. THIS is where the move to FM comes in. It helps assure full market coverage for a format......especially if you're talking about a class B or class C.

Just wait and see......one of these days, Holland's "WHJJ-FM" will come to pass......

WHJJ will not be simulcasted on WSNE anytime soon. From my understanding WSNE brings in more money than WHJJ.Not enough to have an airstaff but enough to keep National Grid from sending 5 day demand notices to keep the lights on.
As for WHJJ.I have no idea.

I agree but they're going to have to be hyper-local stations a la WOON, WSAR, WPRO, WADK (to a lesser extent), etc.. That's for this area. As for Florida, the bird stuff works better there as a lot of people aren't natives. When I lived in St. Augustine, Fl. our N/T station was mostly satellite but did have a local morning show for 3 hours per day, 6 days per week. We then had the "Savings Post."

Sort of fusing topics, I have a curiosity that a smooth jazz could work on A.M. radio. It replaces the EZ, BB/NOS stations.

They have enough money to keep National Grid satisfied but not enough for an airstaff? Then they're not a radio station. They're a computer with music coming out of it and there aren't a helluva lot of people in their target audience who don't have access to a computer with music coming out of it. Ridiculous.

Back to the original point of this thread...yes.....as was detailed by his induction in the Hall of Fame last month-Jim Mendes WAS jazz here in Providence. There are a multitude of jazz songs actually written about Jim! I was glad to offer him up for nomination on my ballot because most people my age only remember him as the booth announcer for WJAR and didn't realize the great contribution he made to the market.

Thanks for the backup, Run. I don't know what some people's problem is with me telling facts.

Well if I am the person you are speaking of, just let it be known that I NEVER had a problem with you speaking the facts. I admitted that I just didn't know. I may have even admitted it twice. So I'm not sure what you are talking about. But that just may mean that I need more medication.
