WASG Daphne is active

After what seems like an eternity of being silent, I stumbled across WASG this afternoon while in Robertsdale. It's on 540 kHz now, with 2.5 kW days from the WIJD tower near I-65/I-165.

They're airing what sounds like contemporary Christian music with no announcers or anything, just a top of hour ID that aired around :10 past.

I wonder if this is permanent or just to keep the license active? The signal was much better than I was expecting, with little fade headed south towards Foley.

Wonder what was the reason for moving from 550 to 540. The original 550 was able to get decent day and night power, and then when WCBI 550 Columbus Miss shut down, that should have opened the door wider for even greater power levels. The original facility, IIRC, was for 144 watts night on 550; the 540 facility is limited to 19 watts.

Original Atmore or Cantonment facilities? I could swear that 550 was a daytimer from the Cantonment tower site (which had a hell of a daytime signal that could be carried over 100 miles down I-10). I think they even simulcast fulltime on WVTJ 610 so they'd have some nighttime signal (610 has the worst AM signal in Pensacola)

I guess the big questions are, will 540 be sold off? Will it get an FM translator? Is anyone buying AM's without a FM translator simulcast? Will it continue the same format WASG carried in Pensacola with perhaps a simulcast on 610 in Pensacola?

The 540 thing didn't strike me as odd until I remember there's a 540 up in Columbus, GA, which isn't that far away relatively speaking.

WASG is shown as the parent of a translator in Mobile on 95.7 but I haven't been up that way lately to see if it's on air.

I did finally hear some listener engagement, mentioning the station's purpose and talking about the music a little, so maybe someone's gonna make a go of it after all. Mobile seems to have a bit of the old time religion on the dial already, so I dunno how successful this go will be.

Original Atmore 550 facility was 3500 watts day, 144 watts at night, and that was with WCBI Columbus Ms still on the air. I actually had an engineering study done to move it to Mobile and considered buying it to combo with WDLT FM.... somewhere around 1989.

Signal is weak here in Fairhope during the day; doubt they're kicking out full power. Much weaker than 1270, which I understand is sharing the tower.

I've heard a legal ID saying WASG 540 AM Mobile. Thought they were licensed to Daphne? I agree the idea of one more religious programmed station in the Bay area is bizarre ... already 660 840 900 960 1110 1270 1360 1410 are programmed to various religious persuasions.... plus some FMs. How many can that audience support?

When I heard it the other day on Sunday, I also heard "WASG Mobile" between what seemed like every other song. However, at the top of the hour I heard her say "WASG-Daphne-Mobile."
